Kien’s Kindred
The Thelli Logs
The three-person crew of the Halo One had one more assignment to complete before taking their much-needed vacation. Go on a surveillance mission to a small planet in a distant part of the galaxy, observe and report back. All was going according to plan until a solar flare sent their spaceship crashing to the surface. Now, Phate, Kien and Solgre have a new mission until rescue arrives.
Find out if Earth females are advanced enough to join the Intergalactic Dating Agency.
The Player. Albeit Kien could’ve gone without the crash landing to Earth but since he’s here, he might as well enjoy himself and their new mission: use the humans’ idea of a dating app to meet and sample as many human women as possible. This was quickly turning into the best mission—ever. It wasn’t until after his neighbor’s fiery best friend came along and his easy-going single lifestyle was suddenly in question. Unlike Phate, who was a romantic at heart, Kien prided himself in his ability to disconnect from the opposite sex. Romantic entanglements had never been his thing but, here he was, obsessing over a petite female from a planet he hadn’t known existed a few months ago. The smart course of action would be to steer clear of Nisha until the rescue ship arrived, putting her and Earth far behind him.
So, why had he accepted a new mission with the very female who could make him unravel? Because he was a glutton for punishment.
The Playette. Nisha wants nothing to do with the man she’d had one horrible date with. Kien was not only a player, but a jerk as well. When her help is needed to provide a cover as a doting and loving couple in order to get their Captain the medicine he needed to survive, she agreed, although she would rather be anywhere but with Kein.
Nisha could lie to Kien about her feelings, but her heart? There’s no lying to it. It’ll take all her resolve to get through the road trip without losing herself in the sexy as hell alien. How was she going to spend a week with this alien when she could barely last a few minutes in his presence?
THESE NOVELLAS ARE meant to be read in chronological order.
Book 1: Phate’s Mate
Book 2: Kien’s Kindred
Book 3: Solgre’s Soulmate
Chapter One
Nisha’s nerves were frazzled. In her mind’s eye, her blood was racing through her veins like a locomotive on wobbly and unstable tracks. At the moment, her anxiety level was cranked up to ten and she couldn’t tell a single soul how she felt. Not even Tasha, her best friend of over twenty years.
Anisha Tabitha Jones thought herself the epitome of cool, calm and collected. She was the same woman who men nervously stuttered in front of and fumbled to get her number wherever she went. And yet, here she was, unable to control her emotions when it came to the hunky alien who didn’t give a damn about her.
She would never admit that. Never!
“Okay, now.” Tasha, her best friend, snapped the plastic lid on the Tupperware bowl full of fried chicken wings. “I made enough for at least two days, although I don’t know about Kien’s appetite.”
Tasha scrunched her eyebrows in thought, then went to the cabinet by the kitchen sink and grabbed another handful of packaged cookies and cakes and tossed them into the already too full cooler. “Just in case you run out of food.”
Phate, one of the three aliens who lived next door to Tasha, stood by the open cooler, inspecting its contents. He glanced up at Tasha’s last words. “Is running out of food an option?”
Nisha swallowed then tamped down her growing unease about traveling with Kien, the alien who had her insides currently doing the Cupid Shuffle on repeat, and with one hand, closed the cooler. “No. We aren’t in any danger of starving if that’s what you’re asking.”
Now that she knew they were from another planet, their speech patterns, questions and their naivety about everyday normal things made sense.
Solgre, the alien captain, and their leader, breezed into Tasha’s apartment without knocking on the door. All three of the aliens matched in height, lavender eyes, pale skin tone and they all had the same blonde, curly hair.
But unlike Phate and Kien, Solgre was skin and bones and he was growing thinner by the day.
It was easy to see his hollow cheeks even with stubble covering his face. The area around his eyes were also sunken and dark. His clothes, which might have fit him before, hung from his wiry frame.
He was sick. Very sick. And it was up to Kien and Nisha to save him.
“I’ve calculated your route.” Solgre made a beeline for the kitchen table. “Four days to get there, walk to Halo One on day five, reconfigure the portable replicator and download the medication compound specs and two days to return.”
While Tasha didn’t seem to mind that her alien neighbors had spent the day barging in and out of her apartment, Nisha did. She wanted her best friend to herself. Their long-time duo dynamic had quickly turned into a frapple. Fiver? Cinco? Hell, Nisha didn’t know what five people were called but frapple seemed to work in her head.
While it was cool to be in the know about aliens and to help them until their rescuers came, she missed the good old days when it was just her barging in on Tasha unannounced.
Jealous much?
Possibly.
Since Phate and Tasha were back together as of last night, there hadn’t been a chance for Nisha to get Tasha alone. And she really needed some best friend time. Stat. She really needed to discuss this whole being alone with Kien for a week thing.
She’d gotten herself into this mess and had to see it through. Ugh.
Nisha sighed. “I’ll be back. I have to go home and pack.”
Phate barely lifted his head from rummaging in the cooler, but Tasha was at her side almost immediately. She dipped her head to whisper, “Are you okay?”
Not even.
But she couldn’t tell her bestie that. Yet.
“I really need to talk to you but not right now. When I get back, do you think you could take a minute away from your lover man?”
Her question may have held a tinge of envy. Not a lot, because she wanted Tasha to be happy and she deserved happiness but was the alien planning to leave in a month the answer to that?
Tasha’s smile was warm which helped quell some of Nisha’s uneasiness. All she really needed was to vent and have a game plan for dealing with Kien for a week. “Sure. We definitely can talk. I know I pressured you into doing this, but if you don’t want to, we can figure something else out.”
And be blamed for an alien dying? Nope. “I’ll do it. Just give me an hour to get my stuff.”
After a hesistant nod from Tasha, Nisha raced out the door.
The first thing she did was call her boss. She worked for the law firm her dad had built from the ground up. Her boss was her deceased dad’s best friend, so getting the time off wasn’t a problem.
As soon as she hung up, Nisha went to her closet and eyed her wardrobe. She grabbed a few pairs of jeans, some pretty tops to go with them and snagged an arm load of pretty panties and matching bras. Next, she headed for her bathroom and had to make the tough decision on which toiletries to take. Moisturizers, facial cleansers, lip glosses, lip stick and other necessities lined her counter. Her last stop had been to one of those shoe outlet stores.
Her mind was frazzled and her thoughts raced the entire time. If this were a spontaneous lovers’ trip, there would’ve been excitement and giddiness. But this was a trip between two people who didn’t get along and who couldn’t stand each other.
That’s what everyone around them thought.
But in truth, one of them had a raging crush on the other.
She was “them”. And she hated herself for it.
When Nisha arrived back at Tasha’s apartment, there were a brief chorus of “Hello’s” as she entered, but besides that, they were engrossed in their activities. Nisha’s gaze scanned the small area. The guys were still in planning mode. All three sat at her dining table while Tasha cooked more food with her cellphone pressed to her ear, ordering more snacks—like restaurants and gas stations on the road didn’t exist.
Nisha allowed her eyes to rest on Kien and as it did everytime she allowed herself to focus on him, like really look at him, her heart sped up. Not only was he gorgeous, but he exuded male energy. It was something about the way his biceps flexed under a shirt that was much too small for him. Or the look of concentration on his face. Or the way the humidity on Earth made his hair curl into big, soft loops. Or his hands... God, just imagining how his hands would feel on her body made a sheen of sweat form on her brow.
How the hell was she going to make it seven days pretending that she couldn’t stand him and that her feelings hadn’t been destroyed when he hadn’t reciprocated them?
And just like that, her uneasiness of being able to effectively pull this off went skyrocketing again. Nisha swallowed the know forming in her throat.
Tasha’s gaze slid to Nisha at hearing her gulp. “About the four days to get there, part. How many of those days include walking because...”
“Maybe eight hours,” Solgre said, laying his communication device thing-y on the table where he and Phate leaned over it.
Nisha had tried to understand what they were working on, but it went over her head and that was saying something for a person who made her career working with legal briefs and complicated court documents.
Their device looked like one of those old school handheld Nintendo games. The screen was dark with a series of green unrecognizable characters on it. And to make matters worse, the characters weren’t in a straight line or anything. To her it was just a screen of chaotic randomness.
“So, the four days?” Nisha finally had the courage to shut the apartment door and walk past the kitchen table and to the living room where she dropped her duffle bag. “That’s all driving?”
“By vehicle,” Solgre said. “It would only take four hours to reach where we left Halo One, but since we might be monitored, it’s best to take the scenic route.”
“Solgre—” Tasha said.
Solgre lifted a hand, cutting her off. “I know what you said, that I’d probably intercepted communication from a division of your government who tracks illegal human immigrants. But I can’t dismiss it so easily.”
“They’ll use extra precaution while traveling, Solgre,” Tasha said, pointedly looking at Nisha for confirmation.
“Extra,” Nisha said, hoping that was enough for Solgre to cut the trip short. Eight to ten hours sounded so much better than being stuck in her Range Rover for a week.
Solgre shook his head. “We’ve already discussed this and came to a conclusion. Seven days for the drive and the hike to the ship.”
Even though Solgre wasn’t their Captain, both Nisha and Tasha snapped their mouths shut at the authority behind his words and voice.
So, not only was she going to be stuck in a hotel with Kien, she would also be exercising. Nisha groaned. It kept getting worse.
Tasha caught Nisha’s eyes and mouthed, “Sorry.”
Nisha blew out a breath. Her friend had nothing to be sorry for. “I knew...well, sorta knew what I was getting myself into when I agreed to this so, que sera sera.”
“But all the walking?” Tasha asked, her face twisted in remorse. “You get winded walking to the parking lot.”
“Um, true,” Nisha chuckled and pointed to her feet which now sported her new orthopedic walking shoes. The sales lady said nurses wore these particular shoes because they supported the feet for twelve-hour shifts “But I think I can handle a few miles. I bought walking shoes.”
Tasha was no longer paying attention to her ugly but comfortable new shoes. Her gaze had slid to Phate, and they were exchanging a look Nisha easily recognized.
Love birds.
Kien stood and stretched. He was a much larger version of Phate and Solgre, towering over his friends in height and bulk.
“Are you complaining about already?” Kien’s eyes were laser focused on Nisha.
Nisha clamped her teeth on her tongue then turned toward Tasha with a stare that conveyed her friend owed her big for this one. Tasha rushed to her side in solidarity.
“That’s really not the way you speak to someone who’s helping you,” Tasha scolded him.
Phate looked up from studying the communication thing to glare at Kien. “Tasha’s right. Without Nisha, we would have to find another female to ride with you and reveal ourselves.”
One side of Kien mouth quirked up. Nisha wondered if he already had someone else in mind. That locomotive on wobbly tracks running through Nisha’s mind earlier? Was now sliding off the rails. Nisha curled her hands into fists so tight her nails bit into her palms.
A thin smile formed on her lips. “You don’t want to go with me, Kien? Fine. I have enough to do without jumping into an episode of roadside nonsense with an alien.” She picked up her duffle bag and looped it on her shoulder. “See you later, Tasha. I’m going home.”
Not going with Kien fit perfectly into her plan. She could put this entire mess behind her.
With head held high and emotions firmly locked down, she strode through Tasha’s apartment. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of knowing that he hurt her feelings—yet again.
Just as she reached the door, a strong hand wrapped around her arm, stopping her in her tracks. “It doesn’t take much to rile you up does it?” As he asked the question, Kien’s voice was full of laughter.
Nisha tensed under his touch. Even though she wore a jacket and had on a long sleeve shirt underneath, she could still feel the palm of his hand as if it laid bare on her skin.
Why did she react this way to the biggest player who’d ever come through her tiny town? She prided herself in being able to beat players at their game. She could bring any man to their knees. Usually. But with Kien? He left her a bundle of hot nerves.
