To friends and first readers Will Goodlad, Edmund Gordon and Joe Stretch. To Karen Kennedy, Gwyneth Stringer, Sos Eltis and Keely Fisher, and to Andrew Motion, Robert Hampson, Jerome de Groot and Kate Williams who all, in their own way, helped shape this book. To Katherine Fry and her fine-toothed comb. To the Manchester Writing School and MMU, in particular Carol Ann Duffy, James Draper, Jess Edwards, Berthold Schoene, Sharon Handley and Malcolm Press. To Oli Wilson for finding a path across the moors, and to Christine and Martin Love, for the loan of their house with its view of the mountains. Finally, most of all, to Hannah, Gabriel and Felix for making life as rich as any fiction.
