‘Oh heavens,’ Redmayne whispered.
Very tenderly, he lowered Stogumber’s head. He took the dead man’s hand and squeezed it till his own knuckles went pale.
The outer door opened. Docking had come back. One of his hands was streaming blood. He stood gazing at them, his face working, his eyes clownish in their aghastness.
Gently jumped up. Docking’s lips jigged.
‘That bitch . . . she had a knife!’
‘A knife!’
‘I tried to stop her . . .’
Blood from his hand was pattering on the rushes.
