Jacob looked at his watch. “I actually have to be at Bravo’s Coffee in a few minutes.”
Aria raised an eyebrow. “Coffee date?”
“Yeah.”
She smiled. “Lucky girl. Enjoy.”
“Same to you, he said.” He then faced Harry. “Take care, both of you. And if you ever need anything, you know where to find me.”
Harry nodded. “Thanks. I appreciate that.”
Jacob said goodbye to Vernon just as he joined the group. The agent approached his brother and gave him a full-on hug. Harry looked a little bit surprised at first but hugged Vernon back.
“Vern,” he said, taking a step back. “You did good. I’m glad you’ve got my back.”
His brother smiled. “Who else is going to look after you?”
Aria grinned and looped her arm around Harry’s, leaning into him. “Me.”
Vern nodded. “That’s good to know.”
One of the LAWT agents from the house called out to Vernon, and he excused himself. Clare and Edwin then approached. Edwin said, “I’m going back to the sin eaters. I’ll let them know what happened here. Aria…I was wondering if, perhaps one day, you would like to be initiated as a Shrivener.”
Clare looked pleased, but Aria froze up, hardly able to respond. “I don’t know if I can answer that right now.”
A Shrivener was a sin eater who went around searching for children with the S-shaped birthmark, who adopted them and took care of them, and mentored and raised them as sin eaters. Could she take on such a responsibility?
“Think about it,” Edwin said. “If you’re ever ready for it, we will gladly accept your initiation.”
Aria nodded.
Clare gave her a quick hug and kiss. “I’m staying with Edwin and the sin eaters for a while. We’ll be working together on some things. And, we have a lot of catching up to do.”
Harry whispered into Aria’s ear. “I bet they do.”
Aria rolled her eyes and elbowed him. “Just a warning, Mom, I’ll call you. Probably every day. You might get a little tired of it.”
Clare shook her head. “Never, my dear. Harry, take care of my girl.”
Edwin asked, “Do you both need a ride somewhere?”
Harry shook his head. “Nah. We’ll hitch a ride with my brother down to the LAWT office so I can pick up my car.”
Aria grinned. “Then what?”
“There is this fabulous little Mexican restaurant called El Nido I want to show you. I know the owner. I saved her nephew from a vamp, and it was epic.”
She stared into his eyes, knowing at that moment that she’d go anywhere with him. “You’ll have to tell me all about that.”
“How much time do you have?”
“For you? Forever.”
