A Very Beary Christmas: A Howls Romance

A Very Beary Christmas: A Howls Romance

Abbie Zanders

Romance

For most people, Christmas is a time to celebrate with family and friends, but not for Chloe Lewis. She plans to spend it as she does every other day— alone, escaping the harsh realities of the world through her art. Painting mountainous landscapes reminds her of the one brief time in her life when she didn’t feel so alone. The hallmark grizzly bear she incorporates into each and every painting has the same golden-brown eyes as the only friend she’d ever known. Sam Brown was only eight years old when Chloe moved to the small mountain town he and his family called home, but his bear knew right away that she was the one for him. In a cruel twist of fate, Chloe was taken away, but he’s never forgotten her – or what she is to him. When Sam’s cousin comes home for the holidays and shows him a painting he’d seen of a very familiar looking bear and signed simply “Chloe”, it might just be the break he’s been hoping for. A winter storm is coming but nothing is going to stop Sam from finding her and bringing her home. After all, Christmas is the time for miracles…

Tears of Adamas: A New Old-Fashion Fairy Tale Short Story

Tears of Adamas: A New Old-Fashion Fairy Tale Short Story

Su Williams

Su Williams

Diamonds are the most celebrated, most coveted gem in history. It was once believed that gemstones were caused by fermentation in the stars. In ancient Greek, the word for diamond is adamas, (pronounced ad-am-us), which means unbreakable or unalterable. Tears of Adamas is the story of a treasure found in the tears of a beautiful girl. In the vein of true old-fashion fairy tales, Tears of Adamas is not without some darkness and slaying. As such, this may not be a story for young children, and was not written as such. Rather, it would be more appropriate for middle grade to adult readers. I was inspired by another author’s story (Ellen Mae Franklin, Tarkeenian series) in which she created a character, a fire sprite, who cries molten silver tears. I’ve included the following excerpt from my Sunshine & Daisies novel. Sunshine & Daisies is a ‘feel good, anecdotal anthology’ meant to inspire memories of happy days gone by.

Sadegh Hedayat

Literature & Fiction / Short Stories

Originally written in Persian, The Blind Owl is predominantly a love story, an unconventional love story that elicits visions and nightmare reveries from the depths of the reader's subconscious. A young man, an old man and a beautiful young girl perform, as if framed within a Persian miniature, a ritual of destruction as gradually the narrator, and the reader, discover the meaning hidden within the dreams. This unforgettable story contains a unique blend of the mystery of the Arabian Nights and an acutely contemporary sense of panic and hallucination.

Shah of Shahs

Shah of Shahs

Ryzard Kapuscinski

Ryzard Kapuscinski

Iran, 1980: the revolutionaries have taken charge. In a deserted Teheran hotel, Ry-szard Kapuscinski tries to make journalistic and human sense out of the mass of notes, tapes, and photographs he has accumulated during his extended stay in Iran. Just what happened and how? What did Khomeini have to offer that the Shah, who promised to "create a second America within a generation," did not? Where did the revolution come from, and where is it going? After all this blood has been spilled, what has it given its people or the world? "We have given the world poetry, miniatures, carpets," says a rug merchant in Teheran. "We have given the world this miraculous, unique use-lessness."Kapuscinski tells a rich story that combines factual reporting with his own impressions and reflections. Always engrossing and frequently revelatory, it is a unique portrait of the psychological state of a country in revolution.
