I don’t know how I’m lucky enough to have Brendan Reichs and Soman Chainani as my friends, but I’m beyond grateful. Sometimes I think I am out of words, or alone, and you remind me that neither is true. You’re two of the best human beings I know. Brendan, writing and working with you is an education and a gift. Soman, you are the Serena Williams of kidlit. Thank you both for everything.

During the writing of this book, I was lucky enough to help start a writing camp for kids in rural Utah. I can’t thank the WriteOut Board enough for their countless hours of service and work on the behalf of the camp and the kids who attend. Scott Condie, Ann Dee Ellis, Krista Bulloch, Denise Lund, Brian Jackson, Amy Jackson, and Brandon Jameson—you made it happen. Thank you for figuring out scholarships, hauling boxes around in a golf cart, writing scavenger hunts, putting together schedules, managing finances, designing graphics, and executing a myriad of other tasks with good humor and great ideas. Bridget Lee, thank you for your generosity in coming on board and helping us learn how to make this ship sail. Enormous thanks to all the volunteers on the ground who help us with the nitty-gritty. And my very deep gratitude to our amazing teen campers, who treat one another with such respect, kindness, generosity, and joy.

Finally, and always, a huge thank-you to the readers. You are the why and the how. Thank you for making this job I love possible. Thank you for caring about books, one another, and the world around you.
