The Silent Bullet

The Silent Bullet

Arthur B. Reeve

Mystery

"It has always seemed strange to me that no one has ever endowed a professorship in criminal science in any of our large universities." Craig Kennedy laid down his evening paper and filled his pipe with my tobacco. In college we had roomed together, had shared everything, even poverty, and now that Craig was a professor of chemistry and I was on the staff of the Star, we had continued the arrangement. Prosperity found us in a rather neat bachelor apartment on the Heights, not far from the University. "Why should there be a chair in criminal science?" I remarked argumentatively, settling back in my chair. "I\'ve done my turn at police headquarters reporting, and I can tell you, Craig, it\'s no place for a college professor. Crime is just crime. And as for dealing with it, the good detective is born and bred to it. College professors for the sociology of the thing, yes; for the detection of it, give me a Byrnes." "On the contrary," replied Kennedy, his clean-cut features betraying an earnestness which I knew indicated that he was leading up to something important, "there is a distinct place for science in the detection of crime. On the Continent they are far in advance of us in that respect. We are mere children beside a dozen crime-specialists in Paris, whom I could name."

Arthur B. Reeve

Mystery

Arthur Reeve was an early 20th century American mystery writer. His character Professor Craig Kennedy is the American counterpart of Sherlock Holmes. 82 Craig Kennedy stories were published in Cosmopolitan and later collected into 12 volumes. From the beginning of Constance Dunlap, "Even when he had thus barricaded himself, he paused to listen with all the elemental fear of the cave man who dreaded the footsteps of his pursuers. In the dim light of the studio apartment he looked anxiously for the figure of his wife. Constance was not there, as she had been on other nights, uneasily awaiting his return. What was the matter? His hand shook a trifle now as he turned the knob of the bedroom door and pushed it softly open."

The Adventuress

The Adventuress

Arthur B. Reeve

Mystery

Marking 100 years since publication, The Adventuress was the only full-length novel to feature 'the American Sherlock Holmes', Craig Kennedy, who was the first fictional detective to use forensic science. An American from Maddox Munitions, Incorporated, the owners of a new invention – the telantomaton – forms the centre round which this exciting mystery tale is built. In trying to answer the ever-present question, "Who killed Marshall Maddox?" the reader is tossed about a sea of conjecture by two strong main currents which continually cross and recross each other and keep him mystified till the end of the book. Scientific inventiveness, at time diabolical in its ruthlessness plays no less strong a part than does Paquita, the adventuress. Was the death of Maddox retributive for his double life or was it due to the covetousness of some schemer? It required a detective of Craig Kennedy's acumen to discover.
