“All right then. What do I do? Tell me.”
“All you have to do is be honest. You’ve got to be real—you’ve got to be yourself. Fully engaged and interested in the here and now.”
She blinked a few times. “I’m not good at that.”
“I think you are, in other situations. You’re a frank person, a girl who says what she means, right?”
“Yes… usually.”
“There you go. So… try it.”
Abigail looked kind of upset. She tossed her hair a few times, thinking it over. “I do like you, James. I’ve been interested in you since the first time I met you.”
“Same here.”
“So… maybe we can make something out of our mutual attraction. What do you think?”
Grinning, I stood to one side and pointed at my couch. “There you go! Was that so hard? Come on in.”
Abigail walked by me, and I waved for her to take a seat. She looked like she wanted to complain about my couch, but she didn’t. Not this time. She was in the groove.
We finished our beers, then drank another. I didn’t grab her, or nothing. I didn’t want to make this easy on her, and I also wanted to see what she would do next.
“This is weird,” she said. “I’m feeling kind of uncomfortable.”
“Why’s that?”
“Because I don’t know the score. I don’t know what’s expected from each of us.”
I rolled my eyes, and she caught that. She gave me a light slap. “You dick! I saw that.”
We laughed, and I finally kissed her, because the moment was right. Timing is everything in these situations.
Hours later, I decided she could be sweet enough when she wanted to be. Sure, she looked like her brothers, and that was a little bit freaky. I had to remind myself of all the times I’d chased the sisters of guys I’d known in the past—their looks hadn’t bothered me then, so it shouldn’t bother me now.
Abigail wasn’t very experienced. Sure, she liked to act like she was sophisticated and worldly and could make a sex-deal like she was swiping credit out of her tapper—but it wasn’t true. I’d been with plenty of women, and I knew this girl was nervous and uncertain underneath.
I found that kind of sweet, and I was gentle with her. We made a night of it, and around two am. we dragged out my daughter’s auto-scope. Etta had left it behind when she’d moved to the city.
It turned out there was some magic left in the stars for both of us. We were seriously well-traveled people, and it was fun to show one another places we’d been. I was surprised to learn she’d seen more planets and stars than I ever had.
When morning came at last, she departed early, saying she had to go off-world. I was left wondering which star would be shining overhead the next time we met.
