  * * *

  Sometime after midnight, I heard a sound. I came awake with a machete in one hand and a pistol in the other.

  It was a pinging sound, and it went off again. The proximity alarm was real quiet, because I’d set it that way. I wanted to have some warning just in case any tiny bastards from Jink’s family decided to pay me a nighttime visit.

  Stalking to the windows, I peeked out. None of the cameras showed anything on the tapper, but—wait. There it was. An air car parked out on the road.

  Shit.

  Opening my front door and turning on the porch light, I waited in the dark entryway.

  A small figure approached. It was cold out, so she wore a big coat with the hood up. The hood was lined with fur.

  What was I going to do? What if Sophia grabbed my hand again? What if she kissed me? Was I going to be able to keep my hands to myself?

  I’m sad to say it, but I wasn’t certain. I’m a deeply flawed man, and as many people have often informed me, I share many characteristics with goats, pigs and dogs. Apes, too.

  So I waited. I waited in the dark.

  At last, the girl’s light step caused the boards of my porch to creak. She threw back her hood, and she smiled up at me. She smiled big.

  It was Galina.

  I grinned back at her. I was so relieved, my smile was completely honest in nature. She sensed how happy I was to see her—but not why—so she didn’t hesitate. She jumped up and I caught her, lifting her butt up in the air. We made out right there in the doorway.

  “I told my father to revive you,” she whispered in my ear. “Did you know that?”

  “I suspected as much,” I whispered back, lying without a qualm. “I guess I owe you one.”

  “Yes. You certainly do.”

  The night went by nicely after that, even if it was a little cold. We didn’t mind, as we made our own heat.

  When I awakened in the morning, Galina was gone. There was only the lingering scent of her perfume on my pillow to prove she’d been there at all.

  Yawning, I stretched and showered, then headed for the house. There were plenty of leftovers in the fridge after all, and I didn’t want my dad to get more than his fair share.
