"Chief," Jim began again, slipping an arm around Blair's shoulder. "Please let me help you. Talk to me." He was surprised when Blair didn't flinch away from his touch, but instead turned and leaned into him. Thankful for the gesture of trust, Jim pulled his friend closer and spoke low, "Whatever it is, we'll work it out. Everything will be all right."

  But Blair shook his head against Jim's shoulder. "No, Jim," he whispered out brokenly. "Everything's not going to be all right. Not this time."
