“If ever I did, you succeeded in ruining it, like you do everything. I’ll never subject myself to that kind of mockery again. In fact, I’ll be content to never see those doughy-faced fiends for as long as I exist.”
“Even Oliver?”
“Why do you insist on tormenting me?”
I smiled at her deflection, which meant no, and took another sip.
Tabitha’s frown morphed into a roguish grin. “So what were you and Miss Feather Pants doing in that secret passage all pressed up against one another?”
“Talking.”
“I have night vision, darling.”
“Fine, we had a moment, but it passed. We decided our friendship was more important.”
“Thank God. I can only imagine the offspring the two of you would produce. Dippy little imps who dye their hair ridiculous colors and run around annoying everyone. I’d have no choice but to end myself.”
I replayed Kayla’s and my almost-kiss before considering her remarks about the woman I would end up with. Someone you’ve already met…
I thought of Johanna, the young woman I’d saved from Tabitha when she was a full-blown succubus, but our relationship had faded with distance. And then there was Caroline Reid, a fellow professor at Midtown College, but my admiration for her was a one-way street.
It was a pointless exercise, I decided. New York was a big city, and I’d met a lot of women in my various doings. It could be any of them. Plus, I already had my hands full with the most demanding one of all.
“Be a darling and rub my shoulders,” she murmured. “Your wretched magic trick knotted me up all over.”
I sighed and set my beer aside. “Sure, Tabby.”

Author’s Note
If readers have sent me one consistent message over the years, it’s that they want more Tabitha.
That hasn’t always been easy in the novels. Prof Croft’s cases take him all over the city, sometimes even to parallel planes, and Tabitha is a committed homebody. I’ve gotten creative a couple times (Epic Con in Prof Croft 6, anyone?), but for the most part her page presence is limited to when their lives intersect back at the apartment.
Croft & Tabby is the workaround: a series of lower-stakes cases early in their relationship when the two were still feeling each other out. Fortunately, there are five years between the second Prof Croft prequel, Siren Call, and the first novel in the main series, Demon Moon. So, lots of little Croft and Tabby adventures yet to explore.
I hope to release at least one of these a year, which will be free to my newsletter subscribers and members of my Facebook group, Prof Croft’s Strange Brigade.
