Resignation: A Post-Apocalyptic EMP Survival series 13 (Dark Road),
p.17
At least Joel and Allie had stopped him and Sandy from dumping their water reserves on the Jeep. They’d used enough as it was on the towels and canvas top. He couldn’t complain, though. They’d survived, and the vehicles were unscathed, save for a few bubbles in the paint.
As the others milled about, refilling Nalgenes and preparing to get back underway, Ben took a minute for himself at the front of the Blazer, where he could follow the interstate with his eyes until it disappeared over the western horizon. He looked out over the blackened landscape that stretched out in front of him.
They’d traveled over three thousand miles so far and had less than one thousand to go before they reached home. There was still a lot of ground to cover, but in that moment, he felt an unexplained sense of euphoria over the prospect of another few days on the road.
He turned around to face the others in time to see Joel push his hand up into the underside of the Jeep’s top so a stream of water spilled off the canvas and onto his brother’s head.
“Hey!” Brad jumped back, his scowl turning to a smile, while Emma laughed at his misfortune.
Gunner barked, not wanting to be left out of the excitement, and Allie shook her finger at Joel, doing her best to keep from laughing at his prank. Ben shook his head. They’d just been through a literal firestorm, and the kids were acting like… Well, they were acting like kids. Their resiliency to the perils of this post-apocalyptic world never ceased to amaze him.
Ben had every reason to feel optimistic about their chances of reaching Durango. And those reasons were standing right in front of him.
