The Syndic operated as a sort of gigantic protective league in what had once been the states east of the Mississippi. Humanity had never had it so good; there was plenty of money, and people were expected to have fun with it. Moral inhibitions had gone the way of the horse: most girls were delightfully amenable, and polo was played in jeeps with 50-caliber machine guns. The hopelessly corrupt old North American Government had been driven literally into the sea but made occasional piratical forays onto the mainland from bases on the islands and coastal fringes of a ruined and savage Europe. West of the Mississippi lay Mob Territory, and in spite of treaties and frequent state visits, it was known that the Mobsters coveted the produtivity and complacency that marked life under The Syndic. Fat, happy, and hedonistic, The Syndic was unprepared to face the realities of impending warfare with the Government, and when a wave of assassinations broke out in New York, it was belatedly decided to take action. Young Charles Orsino, polo-playing scion of one of the ruling families, volunteered for a spying assignment. Here begins one of the most fantastic adventures ever to involve brain washing, witchcraft, and murder in a plot that ranges from Druidical rites to old-fashioned twenty-first-century romance.

Published more than 60 years ago, this dark and prescient story of a future devolved to idiocy remains one of the most frightening visions to have emerged from the science fiction of that decade. Envisioning a future United States overwhelmed by a citizenry of low IQ (a consequence of the overbreeding of the stupid) Kornbluth was in fact writing of an observed present. The steady, inexorable descent of human intelligence obsessed Kornbluth, was one of his major themes and reached its truest statement in this novelette. The secret masters of Kornbluth's future are a small population of the intelligent who in subterranean fashion run the country but the "marching morons" overwhelm them and they summon a cynical entrepreneur from the past to help them deal with the dilemma. Weak on technology (a time machine is employed scoop the entrepreneur into their present) the novelette is deadly accurate in its portrait of a society sunk in stupid television, ornate, worthless automobiles...

Though he died at age 34, Cyril M. Kornbluth left behind a vast body of classic SF writings (he sold his first story at age 15, in 1939). His Share of Glory, introduced by Frederik Pohl (Kornbluth's erstwhile collaborator), edited by Timothy P. Szczesuil, collects for the first time the 56 short stories that Kornbluth wrote solo.

It was enough to curdle the blood. Haendl was proposing to fight—against the invulnerable, the almost godlike Pyramids!
Haendl stood up. "Tropile, that's what this is all about!" He gestured around him. "Guns, tanks, airplanes—it's going to be us against them. Never mind the Sheep; they don't count. It's going to be Pyramids and Wolves, and the Pyramids won't win. And then—"
He was glowing, and the fever was contagious. Tropile felt his own blood begin to pound. Haendl hadn't finished his "and then—", but he didn't have to. It was obvious. And then the Earth would go back to its own solar system, and an end to the five-year cycle of frost and hunger.
And then the Wolves would rule a world worth ruling.
