He laughed and, as luck would have it, caught a glimpse of Gretchen Halifax as she danced by with Malcolm Durmorr. And sure enough, the look she knifed his way could have cut glass.
Gretchen didn’t bother him. Jonathan Devlin’s murder bothered him, as it bothered all of the guys Gavin had confided in—Mark, Connor and Logan. They had jumped on the bandwagon, too, and were actively campaigning for him for mayor—everyone but Gavin, since his own elected position of Sheriff kept him from campaigning openly. Still, Jake knew he had Gavin’s support.
“Who’s that with Logan Voss?” Chrissie asked when they waltzed by the bar area. “Oh, wait, isn’t that the TV reporter who’s covering the celebration?”
“Melissa Mason,” Jake said, following Chrissie’s gaze and seeing the reporter with Logan.
“They seem pretty familiar,” she observed. “She’s gorgeous, isn’t she? I’ve seen her newscasts, envied her. She’s even prettier in person.”
“She’s pretty enough,” Jake said and waited for Chrissie to meet his eyes, “if you like that type. Me? I go for a hot blonde with wild hazel eyes and the sweetest body to ever skinny-dip in the lake on my south forty.”
“I’d better be the only blonde who ever skinny-dips in that lake, Mister.”
“The one and only,” he promised, loving her more than he had ever imagined was possible to love a woman. “Always and forever my one and only.”
He lowered his head to hers and kissed her, right in the middle of the dance floor, not caring that half the county was watching, and smiling as he did.
