Book Description
Prologue
The dark clouds threatened overhead as he sneered.
Mina was playing house with her human while he could no longer stand the stench of humanity. But then, she’d been flawed from birth, the stench of humanity inevitable. While he’d been born perfect.
He shook his head in disgust, did she really believe this plan of hers would work, to just go after the aggressive ones. All of humanity was corrupt, it was just a matter of time before they were all corrupted by the power they now held. His power.
He had to admit she had reached relative stability that way, for now, but had she forgotten he was here too? That he’d be watching, planning, and eventually acting?
While Mina was playing in the mud, running around putting out fires, and working on her pathetic plan, he’d been planning a war campaign, non-stop. Invading and subverting military computer systems, gathering resources, finding and even contacting the so-called supers of humanity. What a joke, he’d created a support system, a help group if you can believe it. He knew he couldn’t. The most absurd thing was it was working as planned. The only thing the humans did better than destroying everything they touched, was whining about it all to each other.
To think he’d actually been worried for a moment, on the day he’d been torn apart.
There was nothing to worry about. He knew what he had to do, and he’d already won. All he had to do was play it out and wait. Unfortunately, the power Mina had stolen ensured he couldn’t take shortcuts, which was annoying but would only delay him. And then when he finally rid the world of humanity, his existence would fade, as if it’d never been. What a sweet release that will be.
It was definitely time to get started, poor Mina wouldn’t even see it coming.
Maude looked around as she flew in. She’d been having a particularly tough time lately and feeling a bit despondent. In the beginning the power had seemed like a blessing, but it wasn’t long until people started to distance themselves from her. First it was her friends, then her neighbors, and finally she’d been fired from her job for creating a tense workplace environment. Even her family was giving her a wide berth, everyone afraid of her.
Just because she could blow things up, with her mind. Kind of like pyro-kinesis in the stories, except so juiced up that when she vibrated molecules faster they tended to explode apart. She wasn’t sure how big an explosion she could make, but she knew she could make very tiny ones as well. It was a range thing, and how much of something she focused on blowing up.
She’d been miserable, no job, no home, and family not letting her crash, until she’d been contacted by a support group. It turned out her story wasn’t so uncommon after all. Others that had been gifted, or cursed by these powers, were all facing the same challenges.
Most of all, she was kind of hoping to find new friends. People that she could relate to and wouldn’t fear her because they were all the same. It was the first meeting in person, though they’d been in contact on a forum for almost two weeks now. There was even a group on Facebook.
She’d hesitate to call it a mixer, there were only six of them including her, and she smiled brightly when she walked into the small Knights of Columbus building which had been reserved for the event. There were other meetings going on she knew, and she could admit she’d have been more reserved about making a longer trip to meet an even larger group. There weren’t that many with powers.
Three guys and two girls, and they were all kind of cute, maybe things were looking up for once. For the first time in a while, the bright smile actually reached her eyes as they smiled back.
Colonel Bauer frowned at the screens. The reaper drone’s weapon systems just went active, and it had moved into an attack profile. Worse, there were three drones that had gone rogue, and had failed to answer their return to base command.
“Captain, you will get back control of your drone now, is that clear?”
Captain Mears shook her head, “Sorry, sir. It’s not responding to any of my commands.”
They watched as the drone locked onto a small building, the heat readings indicated there were eight people present inside. Eight Americans. The other two drones hadn’t yet acquired a target, so he ignored them for now. Fix this one, and they’d know what to do with the others.
But they were out of time.
The Colonel scowled, and he wondered if he was about to tank his career. Drones were not cheap.
“Destroy it, Captain. Now. That’s a direct order.”
The captain typed several commands, each one more frantic than the last.
“Sir, the self-destruct order is being ignored too.”
He frowned, “That should be impossible, it’s an independent system separate from the aircraft. I…” the colonel trailed off, as two air to surface missiles were launched.
They watched in horror as the building disappeared into two fiery explosions. No one inside could’ve survived it.
The colonel barked, “Get the general on the horn, and get two fighters up now. We’ll have to shoot down the other two drones.”
Mears pointed, “Too late, sir.”
The other two drones had acquired targets, and it’d take minutes to scramble jets, when they only had seconds. Those buildings went up in huge balls of fire as well, ultimately being completely blown apart.
Mears cleared her throat, “Sir, we have them, they’re ours to control again.”
The colonel barked, “Get them on the ground, and don’t let anyone near them. Park them on the edge of the runway near the firing range… just in case. Also, someone find out if we can figure out who was in those buildings.”
He didn’t believe for a second the drones couldn’t be stolen away from them again. Unless it was an inside job, but the general would be here taking control long before any of his staff left the building. He hated doing it, not trusting his people, but he had no choice but to quietly send a message to the MPs to lock this facility down. No one was going anywhere until he’d figured out what the hell had just happened.
Maude groaned as she pushed off the bathroom divider wall. She wasn’t sure what had just happened, she just knew it wasn’t her that blew up the building. She’d been in the bathroom when it had happened, and her clothes were destroyed, and her skin was blistered all over. It hurt, but she was already healing if slowly.
She looked at the devastation in horror, right before five brightly glowing golden clouds raced in her direction. She was shocked at what that meant, all the others had died. Being super made them a little stronger, faster, and tougher in addition to the unique power granted, but not bulletproof, so definitely not explosion proof. It was a miracle she was alive, the concrete walls blocking most of the explosion, and the three metal divider walls between her and the source of the explosion had deflected most of the exploding concrete and saved her life.
Damn, and that Billy had been cute.
She was also horrified that she’d have six powers now. Her family would disown her for sure.
Of course, that horror didn’t last long. When the sixth power painfully sunk into her skin like a million stabbing needles making her cry out, Maude didn’t have to worry about anything anymore, as she may as well have ceased to exist. The shard intelligence formed, something she knew nothing about, but she felt its inimical presence in her mind. Then before she could even think to fear it, she was being forced into the dark recesses of her mind, and then… nothing.
Chapter One
The day before…
It was a warm Friday late afternoon toward the end of May, almost two weeks after we’d taken out the last hunter, at least for the time being, and as foolish as it sounded, I felt a little nervous as my front doorbell rang.
Mina was the love of my life, I had no doubts of that, and I’d sooner die than cheat on her. I’d never cheated on any of my girlfriends, partly because I valued that same loyalty too much from the other side and the rest of it was that I simply wasn’t a dick.
But, I also couldn’t deny as I moved toward the door how I’d felt to receive Kristen’s surprising call a few days back. I’d been surprised and intrigued to hear from her, even though we were good friends back in school I’d thought that life closed and behind me. How I’d felt when she told me she was in town, and that she wanted to see me, had shocked me.
>
So, I’d invited her to dinner at my house to catch up.
I liked her, no doubt of that, as a friend for a long time. She was one of the best people I’d ever met, kind to a fault with everyone and she’d gotten a double helping of empathy at birth. I’d also known about the attraction she’d been harboring for me the whole time I’d been dating her best-friend Olivia.
But the desire was the new and shocking part. It was also a bit wistful, the road not taken kind of regret which added to its potency. She was far kinder and sweeter than her best friend, which in hindsight had been a bit of a destructive relationship. But Olivia had blinded me with fantastic sex for a very long time.
The kind of wistful desire that would become explosive, at the smallest spark.
This new desire I felt must’ve also been partly because of the revenge fuck thing. I’d hit on Kristen when I realized that Olivia was truly done with me, out of anger and to get back at her for being a cold evil bitch. I’d felt guilty about doing that to Kristen, but she’d forgiven me easily for it. Too easily really.
Point being, perhaps my emotions shifted after I’d slept with her even just the once, along with the fact of recognizing she was the far better woman. She was also the only person that hadn’t turned their back on me in college, when I’d blown out my knee and had been permanently benched for medical reasons. That last reason alone endeared her to me, when the rest of the world either abandoned me because I wasn’t useful to them anymore, like the university and Olivia, or because it was just awkward to be around me, the team in that case.
All that said, also not that big a deal. I wouldn’t act on that desire in a million years, but the wistful attraction hit me even harder, as I feared it would, when I opened the door with a confident smile and looked into her light warm brown eyes.
Sexual tension, check. It was electric.
Also, unfortunately perhaps, far from completely shallow because of our long friendship, respect, and how well we knew each other, but nothing compared to the deep love I had for Mina. So easily resisted.
It was something that we’d never really had before though, not from my side anyway.
If the look in her eyes was any indication, the flame she was fanning for me for two years hadn’t gone out either. She wasn’t in the same playing field as Mina and Julia, who from a purely shallow standpoint were dark haired and blonde-haired goddesses of alluring beauty in my book, but Kristen was really cute around the face. A solid six, and a seven for anyone that preferred the really light brown hair with just hint of blonde in it, and warm brown eyes. Sweet and innocently cute look, even if not truly pretty, with a soft heart-shaped face. She was perhaps, the ultimate girl next door that way.
Her body was very much in shape, lithe and athletic at five foot seven, and although not in evidence at the moment she had prominent and extremely proud torpedo shaped B cups, with the largest dark brown nipples I’d ever seen. Her ass was rounded, and her lithe curves gentle. She in short, had a dancer’s body, and it had a ton of sex appeal.
Her smile was fantastic.
“Kristen, it’s good to see you, come on in.”
She walked past me as I moved to the side, and then I gently closed the door before I turned back to her.
She looked around, “This place is amazing.”
“Thanks, would you believe Mina called it a modest dwelling? You look great, new job agreeing with you?”
She was in a black swishy skirt, with a red blouse unbuttoned enough to show off a tiny bit of her cleavage, and black shoes with two-inch heels. She looked ready to go out dancing, which in truth was part two of our planned evening. The only reason we were eating in was because Julia didn’t do well with crowds, so it’d only be me, Mina, and Kristen going out.
Despite the sexual tension humming between us, I wasn’t being deceptive or leading her on, which would be a dick move. I’d already told her all about Mina during our phone call, she wasn’t expecting anything to happen, I didn’t think. I’d also filled her in on Julia.
She hadn’t seemed all that surprised at the time, so I guessed she’d seen some of the articles out there about us.
She smiled, “Going well so far, if a lot of busywork. Their case files are immaculate, but their business files are… a mess, really. Their new CFO made it very clear she wasn’t responsible, and that she needed help getting it all in hand, which is why the internship position opened up.”
I waved leadingly, “The ladies are in the kitchen putting the final touches on dinner. What do you want to drink?”
She asked, “What are the options? They’re both underage for drinking, aren’t they?”
That wasn’t a dig, at all, not even a subtle or playful one. She was just asking if I had alcohol stocked.
“Yes, so no getting tipsy for us. Iced tea, coffee, regular tea, water, umm root beer and coke.”
Julia really liked root beer for some reason.
It was probably a good thing there’d be no alcohol. I wouldn’t cheat even with lowered inhibitions, but I might have started to flirt with her or something. I’d already complimented her on her appearance after all, and that was not something I’d normally do for someone that was just a friend.
She said, “Just water, ice if you have it, but maybe a coffee after dinner before we head to the blues club. It’s been a long day.”
“Coming right up,” I said as I led her into the kitchen.
Julia teased, “It’s already up?”
I snorted.
Julia was truly gorgeous, the face of a catwalk model with high sharp cheekbones, fair and flawless skin, with a hint of gold in it. Also a hint of exotic beauty, as she had some Latina blood in her but was mostly blonde bombshell, with long and straight extremely light blonde hair, and liquid soft gray eyes. If her face was severely beautiful, her body was a lushly wicked call to sin, with rounded Double D cups, a thin waist, and a juicy bubbled ass. At five foot seven she was quite curvy with those dimensions.
She was also a little crazy because of her ordeal in her teens, and although she feared being touched, she was very free with the sexual innuendo and flirting. Even encouraged me to pleasure my eyes with her sexy body. She’d been slowly adjusting to life off the streets, but what wasn’t really odd to me anymore seemed wildly out of place when she did it in front of our guest.
Working at the stove was Mina.
Julia may be a goddess, but Mina was my goddess. She was a lady outside the bedroom, never cursed, was graceful with flawless posture, and she had a maturity and dignity I’d never encountered in an eighteen-year-old before. In the bedroom she was my kinky good girl, not only wild in bed but willingly and eagerly depraved. In truth, she drove me crazy with it, often and in a very good way, and she made my nympho ex-girlfriend look staid and boring in bed.
She was on the petite side at five foot four, and all graceful and sexy eastern beauty, specifically Japanese, though with a hint of Eurasian as her grandmother on her mother’s side had been from Europe. Her beauty was breathtakingly delicate and sophisticated.
She had long wavy dark midnight hair, and gorgeous and seductive dark chocolate eyes. Her face had an elegant beauty, it was oval with gentle low cheekbones, and she had rich silky pale skin. Her body was absolute perfection being in flawless and symmetrical proportion to her height. Not athletic, lithe, or lush, but right in the middle of all of them, with thirty-four B rounded breasts, eighteen-inch waist, and thirty-four inches around the hips, with a deliciously supple pear-shaped ass.
She smiled, “Welcome to our home, Kristen.”
Julia made a face, “Yes, welcome. Sorry, I just can’t resist teasing Jack when those opportunities come along.”
Kristen waved, “It’s nice to meet you both,” she turned to Julia, “So, does he have that problem often around you two?”
I gaped at her in disbelief, while Julia cackled like a madwoman.
Mina beamed, “It’s nice to meet you too. I’d love to swap stories and hear about Jack’s past from another point of view.”
Julia interjected, “Yes, he’s far too humble about himself, even in his confidence.”
I looked at her in surprise, that sounded suspiciously like a compliment, even if a slight bit backhanded, which wasn’t common to hear from the beautiful blonde.
