We were closing rather quickly with the remaining attacking ships, they got off three volleys in unison, and right before the fourth the ten ships were close enough. The five in front perhaps a little too close. I started up the sonic weapon two seconds before the next offensive volley would be released.

This time, I saw several people on the opposing ships lose their balance, and some even fell to the ground with a scream.

Those wouldn’t be able to defend, and then the heated pressure shock waves were once again released, but this time to devastating effect. I stopped transmitting.

Eight more ships were turned into match sticks, just two left. Perhaps those two had felt and figured out what I’d done with the first ten ships that had killed themselves. Still, the fight just became even, which was good, because I was out of tricks. Hopefully, we’d kill both ships, and then my secret weapon wouldn’t get out quite yet.

But both of them turned away and started to flee in different directions. We could split up, but I wasn’t sure how the newbie ship would stack up, and what if we sent them the wrong way and they ran into a diviner without one of their own, or elves.

The captain must’ve agreed with me, because she called out a turn to port, and went after the ship that broke that way. We chased it for close to fifteen minutes, and closed to magical range painfully slowly.

But we’d chosen wrong, there was no diviner on that ship. I no sooner subverted their ward, and the ship was set afire, and torn apart by its own water, steal, and air.

We turned, and chased after the other ship, but it had a pretty damned good lead.

Fucking Murphy, I wasn’t letting that asshole get away to gather another bigger fleet to face in eight more weeks when we left Emelle. Not to mention with the knowledge my brand new secret weapon. I had the feeling this was the same asshole that had run eight weeks ago, when he’d spent his fourteen ships to test my ward design.

We weren’t letting the bastard do it again.

“Lia, Sharon, Jenny, Marie, Amara, Ashera, and Gorwin to me!” I yelled.

They didn’t even hesitate, a few moments later I wrapped us in one of those air boxes, and took us up. I made the box longer on the fly, and more pointed and angular in the front, increasing our aerodynamics and speed. Their ship had a head start, but I was flying at least sixty miles an hour now.

“Amara, can you, Ashera, and Gorwin get around us on the outside, and start up that protective thing again.”

They moved and I felt their nature magic start up again.

Sharon asked, “You’re taking on that ship, and most likely another diviner with just eight of us?”

I nodded, “Yup. Good plan right? I’m not letting that bastard get away.”

Jenna smirked, “Sounds like a plan to me, but then I’m a little crazy. Are you sure…” she trailed off.

I shrugged, “I never said I was going to fight fair.”

I channeled more of Sharon’s magic, and increased her power greatly as we got within a thousand yards of the ship, and then dove at the water. I giggled like a kid, when I heard several shrieks as we speared into the sea and started to go deep. Between Sharon’s power over water, and Lia’s very strong power of air, I was able to keep the water at bay, and we were in a little bubble.

We went down to about seven hundred feet, and then I used Sharon’s power to start creating ice bergs. Thirty or so large ones, that immediately shot for the surface. Large pointy ice bergs that I gleefully pictured impaling the bottom of the ship as they bobbed to the surface, but truly doubted that would actually happen.

I wasn’t that lucky, because of course, I couldn’t pinpoint the exact location of the enemy ship after diving, so I made a lot of them, in a wide area. Then I got a bit nervous that the air might grow too stale, so I rose back from the depths, and shot into the air and rose quickly to seven hundred feet.

We looked down at the mess below, and saw the ship. It hadn’t been holed from below, but it had taken a glancing hit.

Glancing hits totally count when it’s a multi-ton piece of ice.

The stern was crushed and splintered, and at a guess I’d say the water wielders were the only reason it hadn’t sank by now. I could see several still forms on the deck, and cautiously lowered us down to six hundred feet and reached magic range.

About a third of them were dead at a guess, by the magic I could feel, although I supposed the ones I couldn’t feel could just be knocked out normal people.

I also felt the diviner. He was unconscious, and I had no qualms about playing fair. The day’s battle had enough danger in it as it was.

I once gain performed my first trick, and formed a large vacuum around the diviner, and a second later I released it. The ship deck that he laid on splintered into a million pieces, and his magical signature winked out, as a loud cracking sound reached our ears.

  Three down, two to go.

Jenna cleared her throat, “I take that back, you’re the crazy one. How did you think of this crazy ass plan?”

I grinned, and said nonsensically, “They thought the titanic was unsinkable.”

I snickered when I got blank looks, and then started to explain about the luxury liner back on my old world. And icebergs. They all lived in a tropical zone after all, so it wasn’t really a known natural hazard to them.

We’d needed to do something to kill time anyway, the captain wouldn’t catch up for another twenty minutes or so. There were several people down there that required bracelets, and I was reluctant to leave them, I didn’t want them to escape. I also imagined there was at least one wielder awake down there, I felt their water magic holding up the ship, and preventing flooding through the splintered and smashed stern. As long as they didn’t attack, that was fine with me.

I’d considered imploding the whole ship, but had decided it was only the diviner that was too dangerous to be allowed to live. There was no way to suppress his powers if he was conscious. Still, I had been tempted to just destroy them all, some of them would know about my sonic weapon, and word would get out when they were eventually released.

Perhaps I needed to introduce the concept of a P.O.W. camp.

Regardless, it was better to need to think of something else for the next large battle, than it would be to kill them all in cold blood. I wasn’t a murderer. Perhaps that was naïve, but I wasn’t going to start to kill to preserve state secrets, I’d only kill to preserve other lives…

  Epilogue

Even the first mate’s quarters were cramped with four of us in there, but we managed. It was only for one night anyway, as we would be taking Emelle in the morning.

After the battle clean-up we’d gone over some possibilities. We all believed that the king would keep the last two diviners at home. Both to increase his protection, since one hadn’t been able to do the job to kill me, we thought he’d use two. The second reason of course, would be to breed more of them. The king had lost three lines of diviners as far as we knew, and they were all that kept the people in line.

Eight years was a long time, and I knew I’d have to figure out new ways to use magic from a distance. I was sure the king would be working on something too, and eight years was long enough for them to do it. Even without the idea of the diviners coming for us anymore, if we were right, we’d have to watch out for that kind of thing.

Wars tended to encourage development in weapons, not to mention other discoveries. Humans were nothing but creative when it came to finding new ways to kill, and protect. I couldn’t afford to underestimate them. That said, I also knew our odds of success had improved tremendously, as long as I stayed vigilant.

I also knew nothing would stop me from finishing what we started, nothing short of death. I’d face the enemy with my mates, friends, queen, and all the others who would fight for a better world. I’d also continue to use my magic to find deception, and short circuit assholes that wanted to ruin it out of selfishness.

Corruption might be an inevitable part of being human, but if I could help it none would exist in the beginning. It’s why my plan had us going to every island, and staying there long enough to build a solid base. It would take a lifetime of effort to keep it bay though.

We had a long way to go, to finish what we’d started on Aramore. The rewards would be worth the effort. Heck, they were already worth it, if I counted my three mates as a reward from the goddess. Somehow, it seemed I was a reward for them as well, or so they believed...
