Gary said in awe, “You came up with all of that on the spot?”

  Mandy nodded, “Pretty much as Nate’s head was rolling. Maybe it was percolating in the back of my head, I mean making the king a watchdog would’ve been impossible with Nate, but a new king of the gods might just fall in line when every other tier-one is on the same page.

  “None of them would trust one of them to rule in Nate’s stead, so I think this is our best and perhaps only chance to modernize. Of course, the downside is that it’s only slightly less impossible to get them all working together. But I think if you two present it as your plan, and Teresa and Fred buy into it, that’s four to seven. The other three ambitious to rule might just accept it, we can hope, maybe.”

  I laughed, “It’s a good idea, Gary and I will suggest it as an alternative after they start to get frustrated about no one letting them step up into the supreme ruler seat.”

  Mandy smiled, “That’s a good tactic. They’ll all be supremely confident when they arrive that they’ll walk out with a crown on their heads. Let them absorb the impossibility of that route first.”

  I said, “Gary?”

  Gary said, “I agree that it’s the best plan. I’m dubious about the others agreeing to such a thing, at their level of corrupted entitlement and envy of Nate, they’ll see this as their big chance. They might choose to go to war with each other, rather than compromise, when the other two don’t back down. But it might work and will be worth a try.”

  I said, “Realistically, we’re also in more danger than we feared we’d be. I suspect several gods cowed by Nate will start going a bit wild and we also may be targeted by others. Also by the humans, if that first part happens the humans won’t put up with it. They can’t beat us if we’re wary enough, but they can seize our assets and be a major pain in the ass, and while a bullet wouldn’t take me down a missile to our roof just might.”

  Vicki said, “I think speculating on the end of the world as we know it calls for a drink,” and walked over to the tray that had a crystal decanter and poured herself two fingers of bourbon, “Anyone else?”

  Amelia replied softly, “A double.”

  Everyone else chimed in, including me.

  This did call for a drink. The question wasn’t whether or not the shit would hit the fan, the question was when, how, and how bad and wide ranging it would be before this was all settled. We’d gone in with good intentions to end Nate’s corruption and restore justice, but with his death at Nancy’s hand wielding an insane god of war, we’d just opened up a can of worms that could very well be worse than just leaving it alone.

  I sighed, results mattered far more than intentions, hopefully we’d be able to recover and fix it.

  I sipped the bourbon when Vicki handed it to me.

  I was also feeling a bit needy with all the adrenaline and the shock of the confrontation, but I needed to settle them all in and make them feel at home, before I could seduce Gary into taking me.

  “Let me give you a tour of the place, everyone is welcome to pick out your own room or join me in mine. The master suite is off limits to all of us for now, including me, but otherwise make yourselves at home and have full run of the house.”

  Eventually I’d take the master suite as my own, but I wanted to talk with my mother before I totally usurped our home as mine now.

  I wasn’t sure what was coming next, outside of the tour and getting Gary to ravish me as soon as possible, that is. I was… really primed for it at the moment, and I bet the rest of us were as well.

  Things were going to get a little crazy, but at least we had three days to take a moment, think, relax, plan, and have a whole lot of family bonding time and sex, as well as get started on wooing Amelia into our hearts and squirming into hers.

  Three days or so, not just for the meeting, but for word of the death of Nate to spread through our society split around the world.

  I was also as I said, worried about my father and extended family. I wasn’t sure how I’d handle it, but I wouldn’t put it past any of them to exert pressure on me that way to bend to demands.

  Maybe our failure was just the way it had to be, and it could’ve been worse by ending with one of our deaths. Sara hadn’t warned us of the possibility, and I had no doubt she’d seen it coming.

  I mean, technically she hadn’t even lied. The backlash for him taking my aunt had left him on the throne. The fact he’d died less than a minute later had nothing to do with us, or my aunt being taken, after all. Our actions had left him on the throne, a whole other minute.

  Hopefully with Mandy’s plan and idea it would turn out even better than we planned.

  The only real question was how much that better solution would cost us in blood, sweat, and tears…
