Oh, I want her, Jake thought. Like I've wanted nothing else in my life. He felt torn between hope and despair. Did he really still have a shot with Angel.> After what she'd said, he couldn't really believe it.
But he wasn't ready, either, to let all hope die.

"Okay, Dr. Graham. I'll be your guinea pig a while longer. We'll give it a shot."
"Wonderful," Graham said. "Can I drop you anywhere?"
"Thanks, but I think I'U walk for a while."
"Are your legs strong enough.^"
Jake opened the door and stepped out. "They'll carry me." When he turned to shut the door, he saw Graham's outstretched hand. He clasped it. Graham's grip was firm, and he didn't let go.
"Where are you going, Jake.>"
"Not sure. I don't know how Mr. C's going to take the loss of his nephew. He may want payback, or he may want to thank me for getting rid of a loose cannon. So I think I'll lay low until I see what shakes out."
"Whatever you do, I want you to check in with me in two weeks. I'll have a battery of tests set up by then."
"Will I see Angel.>"
"If I have anything to say about it—yes."
"Then I'll see you in two weeks."
Graham finally released his hand and Jake slammed the door. As he walked away, he looked up at the windows of Graham's house. He thought he saw a curtain move, as if someone had been watching him and had stepped back when he turned.
Or was that just wishful thinking.^
Turning away again, he kept walking.
Where to from here.> he wondered. He was out of the hit game. What else did he know.>
He'd worry about that later. Right now he simply wanted to walk.
Because walking was something he never again would take for granted.

Jake Nacht is a man who knows how to take risks and believes in justice, even if it is of the skewed sort. He's one of the best at what he does—and what he does is kill people for a living. But it's a young man's game and he wants out. He goes on one last hit, is double-crossed, and is left completely paralyzed.
The mob thinks Nacht's a done deal.
What they don't know is that a brilliant doctor has developed a dangerous and deadly new therapy. If he succeeds, Jake Nacht will not only walk again but just might have a shot at revenge.
