Gideon returned with a platter stacked high with sandwiches on one side and brownies on the other.

  I had to laugh. He was so good to me. He sat down next to me and held the platter out for me to take some food. I picked up the closest sandwich and bit into the soft white bread with relish. The hunger really hit me then. I devoured the entire platter and finally started to feel like a person again.

  “You did an incredible thing,” Dante said as he sat on the edge of the bed.

  Gideon had curled up next to me, and I leaned against Kane. I didn’t want to imagine a life without them.

  It was another day before I had the strength to get out of bed and wander around. Everything looked so normal. The skies were grey and threatening rain, the grass was short and green, and the birds sang their merry little songs. It was as though the world didn’t know how close it had come to ending.

  I tried denying it at first. I put on pretty smiles and brushed the feeling aside, but I was different. The feeling of being a goddess was just below the surface now. No longer was it buried deep inside of me. It was a quiet whispering voice, a constant companion as I laughed at Kane’s awful jokes and watched Gideon try and convince himself he liked tea.

  If I believed that voice, then it was only a matter of time before my nightmares and the broken world became a reality.
