  Clint walked with Emrys to the livery stable. He was going to pick up Eclipse, while the magician claimed his wagon, and then they’d go their separate ways.

  Clint saddled Eclipse and walked him out the back, where Emrys had hitched his mare to the wagon. They both walked to the front, leading their horses.

  “I don’t suppose there’s a chance I can get a look inside the wagon, is there?” Clint asked.

  “You’ve seen the inside.”

  “I know,” Clint said. “I just thought . . . another look.”

  “Of course.”

  Clint was surprised. Emrys walked to the rear of the wagon and opened the doors. The sun lit up the interior and Clint saw nothing that he hadn’t seen before—sacks and barrels of supplies, other items hanging on the sides that fit into Emrys’s act. The man’s robe was hanging on a nail. From what he could see, there was only one robe, so this had to be the one he’d been wearing when Morley shot him in the chest. Clint still could not explain why there was no hole, no blood, no injury.

  “Have you seen enough?” Emrys asked.

  “I suppose so.”

  Emrys closed the doors.

  “Where are you heading?” the magician asked.

  “South,” Clint said. “To Texas. What about you?”

  “I am not sure,” Emrys said. “I suppose I will just continue west.”

  The two men shook hands.

  “You’re the most unusual man I’ve ever met,” Clint said.

  “Perhaps we’ll meet again in the future,” Emrys said.

  As the magician drove away in his wagon, Clint wondered how far into the future he might have been looking.
