He turned abruptly away from her and walked over to the window and stood gazing out. 'I ask leave to court you,' he said. 'I know I'm not giving you much time, but eight weeks should be long enough to convince you of my sincerity. I warn you I do not intend to fail.'
Corinne looked at his tall proud figure, and her heart filled with love for him. She could guess how much it had cost him to put a rein on his feelings for her, for that was not his way. Juan swung round and his eyes searched her limpid ones, then with a sudden gasp of understanding he caught her to him, his lips finding hers with swift accuracy, and she heard him say one word before his lips descended upon hers.
'What does querida mean ?' she asked him shyly, a little later on.
'It means beloved,' whispered Juan against her lips. 'You will always be my querida,' he added huskily, as he drew her back into his arms again.
