Andromeda Rising,
p.28
“I might be able to help.” His voice dropped down to a whisper, and he looked around again before he continued. “I’ve got a line on a beacon, Andi…the whole setup. And, it’s been wiped.”
Andi looked back, as understanding began to flow through her mind. All ships were required to carry beacons that transmitted their identification. They were usually hardwired, impossible to reprogram.
“You mean you can…”
“It’s illegal as hell, of course, but my contact can give us the beacon, and set up a file in the registry for a new ship. Complete with background, location of construction, and everything.”
“You mean, disguise Nightrunner as…”
“As some other ship. One with enough cover out there to satisfy all but the most diligent search.”
“And you can install it?”
“I can. I’ll do it for nothing, fair enough considering what I already charged you. But my contact with the beacon’s going to want platinum for the hardware.”
Andi held back a sigh. “How much?”
Durango looked both ways again, and then he leaned forward and whispered to her.
It was a lot, especially in the current situation. But she could come up with it, barely.
So much for filling the fuel tanks and the food locker…
“Let’s do it. And as quickly as possible.” They really had to get back out there, even more than before. She had never felt so poor, not even when she was combing through the garbage for food.
“We can get it done in two days, three tops.” A pause. “There’s just one thing…we’ll need a new name.”
Andi hadn’t even thought about that. She’d never named anything in her life, and she had no idea what to tell him. She stood where she was, her eyes dropping to the deck, moving to the sack she’d dropped to the deck about a meter away. It was her stuff, her meager collection of clothes and other possessions.
Her eyes fixed on one small spot on the bag, a rectangular shape, pushing out against the fabric. She knew what it was immediately. The old book, the Marine’s book, the one she’d taken with her when she’d left Parsephon.
And, suddenly she knew the new name for the ship, without a slightest doubt.
“Let’s name her Pegasus.”
