  Matthew leaned forward and pressed a finger to Luke’s shoulder. “Too much sun here, I’d say. Pam, did you bring a T-shirt for Marianne? She’s awfully pink.”

  Beatrice sensed the entire party freeze. Tanya unrolled a T-shirt from her backpack and handed it to Luke with a wink. “Yes, I did. Put that on, my love, we don’t want you to get burnt.”

  No one moved for a second. Then Luke dragged on the T-shirt and returned his mother’s wink. “OK, no worries.”

  “Isn’t this a lovely spot?” said Marianne.

  Everyone made noises of agreement and continued eating.
