“I’m Riggs, who are you?”
The tone evoked no safe passage. Despite his rank, this woman was in command. Thankfully, Xero came to his aid. “Deb, this is my friend, Valyn. Joe put him in command while he fought off a boarding attempt.”
“He’s Fleet. Joe wouldn’t have done that,” Deb said, grabbing for the back of a chair and dropping into it heavily.
She tapped the side of her cheek, “Prowler, come in – Sitrep.”
“We can’t raise them either, Deb. He’s no longer on the ship.”
“Did those bastards pick him up?” She pointed to the threat screen. It was clear, but they all knew what she meant.
“No, we don’t think so.”
“Captain Valyn, you need to surrender the ship.”
“Not an option, Lieutenant.”
“It’s our only option, sir. I’ve been trying to explain that to everyone – even Joe.”
“Riggs, this ship is the last battle-worthy vessel of our entire fleet, maybe the last best hope for humanity’s survival, and you want me to hand it over to an unknown enemy? An aggressor who may have had a hand in starting this…eradication of our planet.”
Her head sunk. “If you don’t, we are already dead…sir.”
“Incoming missiles, multiple bogies, sir.”
