Certhalla bows. To me! “Thank you, Carmella. I’m sorry for the trouble. I promise not to intervene again.”

There are employees already picking up the remains of their boss. Cleaning it away as if it never happened. They appear to be a little frightened being this close to me.

I’m something to fear? I guess I am. I trapped him without much trouble at all.

It’s been three weeks since being home. Halloween came and went, and Thanksgiving is right around the corner. A week away to be exact. Mav and I bought a house, with loads of land. It has a gym to work out my muscles and learn to fight. More than the basic self-defense classes he ordered me to take. We have designated a training area for my magic on the grounds. It’s far enough away from the house to ensure nothing accidentally hits it and causes damage.

I cast a spell around the house to alert us of intruders. There’s also a protection spell to guarantee that, if for some reason my magic does go that far, it won’t damage it.

I have a place in the house where I practice my crafts. Like making potions and writing new spells. I keep my book constantly available for the three of us, myself, Maverick, and Bohen, to peruse any time we want to. Maverick doesn’t really look at it unless I’m up there skimming it. He said it’s not his information, and he’s happy to learn whatever it is I’m willing to share.

Bohen looks through it a lot. Reminiscing on his family, and his adopted brother and sister.

We’ve given Bohen his own room. He has the one downstairs. He has a few things, but he’s a ghost. He doesn’t sleep, and can’t change his clothes. This outfit he wears is the one he had on when he fought Samuel and his men before he was put into a coma. Kind of sad, really. With Bohen living with us, it gives me someone to tell me about my parents, and it gives me another piece of family.

Bohen has been filling me in on stories about their childhood. It’s a side of my parents I get to hear about through my uncle. But I’m glad Bohen can remember all of that.

Gellevel has been here a lot, helping us set up an armory. I had no idea Mav was hiding a weapons stash in the house. So, I told him to make sure he has one large enough for me to practice with them.

Every time I swing blades around, his eyes gleam with desire. I can’t say I don’t like that he gets turned on so easily.

We have our meeting with his council leaders in four days. They are to hear about our stories through us. Since they’ve already learned of me being a witch and not a human as Mav had claimed.

He’s very confident that the council will not rule for our deaths, mostly because I’m the last of two bloodlines, and his family is extremely powerful.

I’m just finishing up my daily magic lesson with Bohen when Mav strolls in. He and his brothers, all of them, along with his mother and father, have been training really hard. Making sure they’re all prepared if the council is stupid and votes to end our lives.

That’s why I’ve been training so much as well. I want to make sure they can’t contain me long enough to kill me.

He comes and wraps me in his arms. Even coated in sweat, I can’t get enough of him touching me. Kissing me. Loving me. I’ll die a very happy woman being mated to this man for the rest of our lives.

“That bitch fried him!” I hiss, looking at the remnants of the corpse that were left for us to find. “How the fuck could she have done that?”

  “She’s a Bishop.”

I snap my head at my youngest brother. “That means shit. We’ve been wiping them off the face of the earth for centuries. There’s no way she can do something of this magnitude. No one has this power.”

Our other brother, the middle child, speaks up. “There was one. It’s why our ancestor, Archibald, started this war.”

I remember. Circe Bishop. “Shit,” I spit out. “We need to be cautious now. She may think she’s won, but there are still the three of us. We will finish father’s mission once and for all.”

  “What do you have planned?”

“For now, we wait. Let her get settled. Let them all believe they’ve won. Then, when they least expect it, we’ll pounce on them.”

I kick at the charred corpse of my father. The youngest speaks up again. “How will we know how to find her? It took our father years to find her parents. Even longer to find her.”

I meet his eyes. “If she has the amount of power you believe she does, it will be hard to mask. Especially if she uses it often to continue to train.”

My brother nods. “Then we track the magic. But we can’t sense it.”

“No, we can’t. But the shifters can. I think it's about time we call in father’s debts. Let them track her down and report back to us.”

My middle brother looks dubious. “I don’t think they will work with us after the show Carmella put on in the club. She wasn’t even trying to earn people to her side, but she ended up doing just that with her display of power. No one will cross her for fear she will do the same to them.”

  “How do you know this?”

“I asked the employees. They told me how it went down. Dad came out, thinking he would win the fight, noticed she had several elf warriors with her, and Bohen. Then he started flinging magic, he didn’t get one hit in. He’s never missed. She blocked them all, then trapped him in a cage made of magic. The damn thing was a bomb. It killed him instantly. Since then, the other supes have been careful to not interact with us. They don’t want her wrath coming down on them.”

  “That stupid bitch,” I hiss.

“There’s more,” he starts. I nod, biting my tongue to hold in my rage. “She declared Maverick Ravalamin as her mate.”

“An elf?” I huff. “She degraded herself with a fucking elf?” I can’t help the distorted laugh that escapes my lips. Who would have thought, the last Bishop and Bennet witch, would sully herself with an elf? An elf warrior at that.

“The strongest of his kind since the war.”

I punch the brick wall. Fucking great. Not only was she blessed with magic stronger than anything we’ve seen since her ancestor, but she has tied herself to the strongest elf family and the strongest of that family. “This isn’t over. I’ll find a way to outwit her. This unsanctioned matting or not. She will die. And it will be at my hands.”
