The actors provide face, voice, body language, texture, and so much more that give authors like me a blueprint from which to write: Majel Barrett (Lwaxana), LeVar Burton (La Forge), Kevin Conway (Kahless), James Doohan (Scotty), Michael Dorn (Worf), Jonathan Frakes (Riker), Bruce French (Genestra), Whoopi Goldberg (Guinan), J.G. Hertzler (Martok), Barry Jenner (Ross), Caroline Kava (Russell), Clyde Kusatsu (Nakamura), Gates McFadden (Crusher), Erik Menyuk (the Traveler), Diana Muldaur (Pulaski), Kate Mulgrew (Janeway), Suzie Plakson (K’Ehleyr), Marina Sirtis (Troi), Brent Spiner (Data), Patrick Stewart (Picard), Wil Wheaton (Wesley), and the quartet of Marc Worden, James Sloyan, Brian Bonsall, and Jon Steuer (who played Alexander at different ages). Also, John Logan, Rick Berman, and the aforementioned Brent Spiner, the minds behind Star Trek Nemesis, who provided me with my end point.

The usual reference sources: Star Charts by Geoffrey Mandel, Star Trek Encyclopedia and Star Trek Chronology by Mike & Denise Okuda, The Klingon Dictionary by Marc Okrand, The Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion by Larry Nemecek, and The Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion by Terry J. Erdmann & Paula M. Block. Also Paramount Pictures for releasing TNG and DS9 on DVD, which sure made checking back on episodes a lot easier….

Dean Wesley Smith—who, in addition to his skills as author and editor, is also a damn fine card player—for vetting the poker scene in Chapter 2; and Dr. Lawrence Schoen—who, in addition to his skills as author and linguist, is also head of the Klingon Language Institute—for providing helpful Klingon language stuff to supplement the dictionary.

The usual gangs of idiots: the Malibu crowd, CITH, the Geek Patrol, and the Forebearance (especially The Mom, GraceAnne Andreassi DeCandido). Also, the regulars at the Star Trek Books BBS (www.psiphi.org), the TrekBBS Literature board (www.trekbbs.com), the Star Trek Books Yahoo!Group (groups.yahoo.com), the Trek books board at Simon & Schuster’s Web site (www.startrekbooks.com), and the Federation Library at Star Trek Now (www.startreknow.com).

For inspiration and assistance they probably didn’t even know they provided: James A. Hartley, Peter Liver-akos, Glenn Hauman, David Honigsberg, Alexandra Elizabeth Honigsberg, Peter Wheeler, Tynan Wheeler, Julienne Lee, Esther M. Friesner, Jacqueline Bundy, Paul T. Semones, Killian Melloy, Tom Holt, Tim Lynch, Bill Williams, Aaron Sorkin, and especially my bestest buddy Laura Anne Gilman.

Last but never ever least, the love of my life, Terri Osborne, who was not only her usual supportive self, but also made one particular suggestion that made the whole book come together.

  About the Author

Keith R.A. DeCandido was once described as a “veritable engine of Trek tale-telling” by the book review Web site wigglefish.com, which explains why he hasn’t gotten much sleep lately. His output in the Star Trek universe since 1999 has included the novels Diplomatic Implausibility, Demons of Air and Darkness, and The Art of the Impossible; the cross-series duology The Brave and the Bold; the comic-book miniseries Perchance to Dream; short fiction in Tales of the Dominion War (which he also edited), No Limits, Prophecy and Change, and What Lay Beyond; eight eBooks in the monthly Star Trek: S.C.E. series (which he also co-developed); and the first two novels in the Star Trek: I.K.S. Gorkon series, which chronicles the adventures of a vessel in the Klingon Defense Force. Among his many forthcoming Trek projects are the Tales from the Captain’s Table anthology, the Ferenginar story in Worlds of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Volume 3, more I.K.S. Gorkon books, and a book that will chronicle the first year of the President Bacco administration following this novel.

Keith has written novels, short fiction, and nonfiction in other universes as well, including Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda, Resident Evil, Farscape, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Marvel Comics, Xena, Doctor Who, and more. His original fantasy novel Dragon Precinct is on sale now, and he also edited the groundbreaking anthology Imaginings. He lives in the Bronx with his wonderful girlfriend, their adorable cats, and way too much stuff. Learn more than you really need to know about Keith at his official Web site at DeCandido.net, or e-mail him directly at keith@decandido.net and let him know just what you think of him.
