In the next few moments, Gabe and I are greeted by other friends and family, too. His parents. His older brothers, Ethan and Shane. Avery and Nick are here as well. All of our combined family and closest friends are gathered in the pub.
“Come on,” Gabe says, after we’ve been welcomed by everyone. Taking my hand, he leads me to the small, empty dance floor. “Dance with me.”
“Dance?” I arch a brow as he takes me tenderly in his arms and we begin to sway together to the ballad that’s competing with the chatter of a ball game on the TVs overhead. “You must be feeling romantic, Mr. Noble.”
“In fact, I am. I’m feeling everything because of you, Ms. Beckham.” He gazes solemnly into my eyes. “I never realized how numb I was before I met you. I used to seek out that feeling, I made it part of my life. Pain killers. Control. Meaningless time spent with forgettable women. Willful estrangement from the people I cared about. I thought the war had taken more than my leg. Hell, I had allowed it to take more than that. Then you showed up.” He lifts his hand between us, gently caressing my cheek. “You shook my world in an instant. You challenged me to feel again, Evelyn. Not only with my body and senses . . . but with my heart.”
“Gabe,” I whisper, trying to hold back the sudden swell of elation his words are causing inside me. Trying, and failing. A small cry spills from my lips. “That’s how you make me feel too. Your love saved me—not only that awful day we almost lost each other, but from the beginning. I love you.”
He kisses me, right there in front of everyone. “Dance with me, Eve.”
I smile against the warmth of his lips. “In case you haven’t noticed, Boy Scout, I am.”
“I mean forever.” He draws back from me, his hazel eyes filled with raw emotion. Then he slowly, carefully sinks down onto his left knee. “Marry me, Evelyn. I don’t know why you chose me over all the other, far better men you deserve, but I’m not going to wait around and let you think better of it. I love you, Evelyn Beckham. Please, marry me.”
I can’t curb the smile that breaks over my face as he takes my hand in his and reaches into his pocket for a glittering diamond ring.
Joy fills me, so immense I can’t hold it inside. And I don’t need to. I don’t need to hold anything inside with this man. Least of all, my love for him.
“Yes, Gabriel Noble.” I nod my head, tears streaming down my cheeks as he slips the beautiful solitaire onto my finger.
The pub room erupts in cheers and applause as I drop down with him on the floor, throwing my arms around his neck. We kiss, surrounded by love, and wrapped in the promise of a future we cannot wait to begin. Together.
