He snapped the headset in half and dropped it, staring at his talon-tipped fingers. He breathed in deep and then released the air slowly, calming his pulse some. He still found the transformation fascinating as he watched the claws slowly retract. He barely felt it—only a slight itch beneath his now-human fingernails. His wickedly sharp teeth were next, morphing back into their prior form. He wasn’t sure what was happening to him on a cellular level and if it could ever be reversed.

But what he did know was that he changed.

  He evolved…

The all too familiar sound of a helicopter broke the silent air around them. It quickly sent Logan into motion. He knelt and retrieved up one of the dead’s rifles and a spare magazine, tucking the latter into his waistband. The feeling of a modern weapon was strange after all these months of hunting and killing with nothing but his physical talents.

Once a soldier, always a soldier, he thought, as he leapt onto a nearby tree, digging in his claws. But he didn’t advance any further, looking down at the two women. Kiani did the same but grabbed a futuristic looking handgun before jumping onto the next closest tree trunk.

He glanced up at the small opening in the canopy above them and then back down to Fayng. Whatever was coming was going to be there soon and Logan wanted to acquire the transport. Thankfully, his flight training—as basic as it was—was still at the forefront of his mind. Then, they could head east as far as the chopper would take them, cutting their travel time down exponentially. They needed to get back to SDF headquarters now more than ever.

He smiled at the older woman. “You coming?”

She grinned and jumped up and over Logan not even worrying about arming herself. Not one to be one-upped by a three-hundred-year-old, Logan ditched the weapon, as did Kiani. Following their elder—their mentor—they both launched themselves up the tree, gripping the bark with ease, heading up to the sky above and back to the modern world.

Phoenix—the Wohn Tod—weren’t the only ones who dabbled in genetics now. The three of them were living, breathing science experiments and they were going to use every single ounce of that brute strength and ferocity against their foe.

  The enemy’s days were numbered.

Logan Reed would see to it…personally.

  A MESSAGE FROM MATTHEW JAMES

Another book done and over with and I have to say that it was an incredible ride. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I did writing it. Like I said earlier in the novel, this story wasn’t as easy to write as some of the others I’ve put together. It really challenged me to think even more outside the box than normal. But the finished product is here and I have to say I’m really happy with it.

Also, if you have a spare moment, could you please leave a review on Amazon.com and/or Goodreads.com? It would be very much appreciated. As an indie author, I rely heavily on word-of-mouth and social media, and every little bit counts. I don’t have some big-name publisher driving sales for me. So, it’s all you, the readers, and the more interest I get…the more books I can write.

  Thanks again, Matt
