About Carolyn Carlson, that’s not my fault. I didn’t mean for anything to happen to anyone but Janet. I told Janet not to share it, and I don’t believe she did, or they’d both have been found together on that lawn. Carolyn stole the bottle I gave to Janet, so it’s her own fault. Stole it and ran away and drank it behind that movie house. People who steal don’t have any right to complain when it goes wrong. I refuse absolutely to take any blame for Carolyn Carlson.

  Now, I’m a really good surgeon. I’ve saved many animals any other vet would euthanize. But my clinic was going under. My loss would have been a loss to hundreds, maybe thousands of pets and their owners. When you balance that against the loss of a sick, unhappy, incurably ill human, it doesn’t seem so awful, does it?

  Hardanger

  Hardanger is a form of counted-thread embroidery that is worked on even-weave cotton fabric of twenty-two threads per inch. If you are new to the craft, please visit www.nordicneedle.net and click on “Stitches.” There you’ll find instructions, complete with illustrations, for all the stitches used to make this bookmark. (They are arranged in alphabetical order, so, for example, to begin building the squares that are the fundamental element of Hardanger, go to K for Kloster Block.) Two sizes of pearl cotton are needed to make the stitches—size 5 and size 8. You will also need tapestry needles sizes 22 and 24, and a good pair of embroidery scissors with fine, sharp points. If this is your first project, select a light-colored fabric and a darker thread.
