“I suppose I’ll have to finish reading the play now to find out how it ends.”

  Rafe chuckled softly. “The play ends, very appropriately, with the correct lovers back together and the magical creatures finished playing games with mere mortals.”

  “It seems wrong of magical creatures to toy with mortals for sport.”

  He looked down at me and his eyes glittered. “Not always for sport. Sometimes, perhaps, the creature longs for one moment of happiness to take with him into his eternal future.”

  My heart was beginning to pound. “Is it ever enough?”

  His smile was wry. “Better, I think, than no happiness at all.”

  “And what of the mortal? Does she always have no memory of what happened in the magical wood?”
