I sat back on the bed. She was dead.

We both looked toward the door when we heard Marcus’s voice in the hallway. Diesel was with him.

  “Take care of Mark, Melissa.”

Beast opened the door, and Donna pulled the trigger. I screamed and turned away.

Diesel helped me from the room while Marcus stayed. “Skittles,” he said. “Skittles, look at me.” Diesel lifted me into his arms, and we met Wendy, Carmen, and Gigi at the end of the hallway. “Take her into church and close the door.” He held my jaw in his hands. “Skittles. Not a word until Beast tells you.”

“Okay,” I said, and he left the room.

“What the fuck happened?” Gigi asked.

I shook my head. I couldn’t say even if I were allowed.

“Get her some water,” Wendy said. She started to leave the room, and I called her back.

“Diesel said for us to stay in the room,” I said. “That’s what we need to do.”

“We heard a gunshot.” Carmen sat in the chair beside me. “Who got shot, Melissa?”

  “I can’t,” I said. “It’s club business. I promised Marcus.”

“What a wild fucking night.” The excitement in Wendy’s voice almost made me sick. It was too much excitement even for a club of outlaws.

“This is what it's like,” I said. “Tomorrow, you should go back to your regular lives. It’s not safe for you here.”

“Fuck that,” Carmen said. “I’m not leaving you.”

  “Me neither,” Wendy said.

  Gigi kept quiet.

For Wendy and Carmen, there was nothing left but the club life. Killing an outlaw biker said as much.

Wendy grabbed four beers from the fridge in the corner, and we drank together, four best friends at a crossroads in our lives and our relationship.

  Beast

I sat on the bed, unable to move, staring at what was left of Donna. For the first time as President of the Brothers, I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t want Mark to know what happened. I couldn’t. Someday, I would tell him, but for now, he needed to think she ran off to Cali for hopes and dreams. It didn’t mean I forgave her. It meant that I cared enough about my son not to traumatize him.

“Beast,” Diesel said from the doorway. “Skittles is in church with her friends. I told her to keep this quiet.”

  “Good,” I said.

“I’m going to grab a bodybag from the garage. We can take her out the back exit.” Diesel left me alone with Donna for the second time.

“I still don’t know why you did it,” I said. “What was the end game?”

“Beast,” Diesel said before entering. He was a good man. He had a black bodybag in his right hand. “I told Cinder to call off the search. You’d decided to let Donna go for now.”

  “Thanks.”

Diesel went to Donna’s side and unzipped the bag. I joined him, and together, we loaded Donna’s body into the bag and zipped it.

“I’ll come back and clean this shit up,” Diesel said. “You should take Skittles home. I’ll have someone bring Mark home in the morning.”

“Have her cremated and bring me the urn. I’ll put it in the house somewhere.”

Diesel put his hand on my shoulder. “Man, she was in too deep. There was no way out for her.”

“I was going to let her go. Send her ass to Cali and have the Cali chapter keep an eye on her.”

We carried Donna out the back exit and loaded her into the van. When we went back inside, I heard Gigi and Stimpy arguing.

“Now, what the fuck is the problem?” I asked, and everyone quieted. Gigi and Stimpy started talking at the same time. “Stimpy, talk. Gigi, stop talking.”

“Can we go outside?” Stimpy asked, and I nodded. We all followed. “See the Rolls Royce at the gate? That’s two men looking for Gigi. They told me to bring her outside, or they would call the police, claiming we’d kidnapped her.”

“Wait. Who the hell is it?” I pointed at Gigi to start talking.

“I think it’s Charles and my father.”

  Diesel started laughing. “Oh, fuck.”

“Why is that funny?” Gigi poked Diesel in the chest several times. “I’m supposed to marry him, remember?”

Diesel nodded, but he wasn’t buying what the cook was serving. “I told you you would return in a week, and I was right. I told you you weren’t getting married, and I think I’m right about that.” He walked over to his bike and switched it on. “Wanna go for a ride?”

“Stimpy, have the Prospects open the gate and let her two daddies in.” I moved next to Diesel. “Do not hit either man. You fucked his daughter and his fiancé. Take your shit and keep your mouth closed.”

“I’m dead,” Gigi said. “Fucking dead.”

“You’re not while you’re on club property. But if you go with those assholes, you made your decision.” She put her hands on her hips as if ready to argue. Skittles promptly came over and pulled her away. The Rolls stopped short of where I was standing. The youngest of the two men got out.

“Gigi, it’s time to go home,” he said. “Playtime is over.”

  Everyone turned to Gigi.

“I wasn’t having playtime, Charles. I was helping Melissa.”

Charles stared at the lot of us. I thought for sure he would piss his pants. The other man in the car emerged, coming to Charles’ rescue.

“Who are you people?” the man asked.

Gigi took a couple of steps forward. “They are . . .”

  “Quiet,” I said.

“Who are you to tell my daughter to be quiet?” He motioned at Gigi. “Get in the car.”

I stuck my hand out to stop Gigi. “My name is Marcus Delaney,” I said. “My friends and enemies call me Beast. Since you’re neither of those, you can call me Marcus. Who are we?” I motioned at the club members behind me. “We’re the Brothers of Chaos.”

“A biker gang,” he said. “So you’re hanging out with trash, Gigi?”

Several guys stepped forward, and I stopped them. “Here’s how this will go down, Chuck and Muck,” I said. “Gigi is going to make a choice. She goes, or she stays. Whatever she decides, everyone will have to be happy with that. Understood?”

“Who do you think you are?” he said.

“The name’s Beast. This is my club. We decide what happens on club property and anywhere else we choose.”

“Gigi, get in the car with Charles.”

Everyone turned to Gigi again and waited for her decision.
