“Why?” he guessed. “For one, you have failed in your duty as the Aspect of War. Your responsibility should have been to calm the tides of war between the great families. And yes, to oversee warfare when it occurred. But not to swear allegiance to a single side.
“Secondly, your failures allowed Calamity to escape. Your men were to capture the docks at all costs. They failed in that, and as their leader I hold you responsible.
“And lastly.” Itan smiled. “Lastly, because you jumped to the wrong conclusion about me. You were right to conclude this body no longer belongs to Ponto-the-orphan. But neither does it belong to Elysa Crane, may her soul rot in eternal solitude.
“She lost that fight, my friend. I won. Itan Mirao. The ‘death priest’ you and the rest of the rabble in Jaruna sought to exterminate. I am the last servant of Mirao, and I will stop at nothing to ensure his will is done.”
Comprehension lit up War’s remaining eye. Whether it was real or imagined, Itan couldn’t say. The thrashing stopped soon after.
Itan felt a shiver run through him, followed by an awakening. A new sense, similar and yet different from the one that had awakened when he’d killed Cosimo Mirao.
Death and War, he thought. Two of the most powerful mortal aspects, united in one. Let the world tremble.
Wow, you made it to the end! Thank you so much for your time! As an author, I will say that’s probably the greatest gift I could receive. All I can hope is that the story was worth it, and you didn’t hate-read your way to the end (if so, you can at least breathe a sigh of relief).
