She looked him dead in the eye. “Do I look like I would fit in there?”

  He stared back. “Do I?”

She imagined him in a tuxedo and bit down on her lip. “Actually, yes.”

“Well, I don’t feel it. I’ll make a confession—half the time I feel like an imposter, and one day William and Bella and the other Pembertons are going to figure out that I’m not management material.”

She shook her head. “Nonsense. They wouldn’t have trusted you with the position if they didn’t think you could do it. Besides, you probably already have a tuxedo and shiny shoes.”

He laughed and rested his head against the back of the seat. “Well, yes, I do.” He turned his head. “So come with me. We can go as a work team. It’s much better than trying to find a plus-one. If we get bored, we can have an impromptu staff meeting.” He grinned and she couldn’t help but smile back. “Consider it moral support.”

“I’ll think about it,” she replied, because what woman in her right mind could say no to Phillipe Leroux?

  “Excellent.”

A little curl of excitement took up residence in her belly. She imagined the ballroom, and the glittering lights and crystal glasses of champagne, hors d’oeuvres that she’d ordered but couldn’t pronounce, and beautiful dresses and shoes. But just like that, her excitement dissipated, and she came to earth with a thud.

How could she attend an Aurora Inc. function in nothing but a little black dress she’d bought on the high street? And there were no funds to buy something new and appropriate—it would cost her an entire month’s rent.

The truth settled in, harsh and deep. She might have a place at Aurora Inc., but she would never be a Pemberton. She might as well face up to that now.
