As Blazer approached his fighter he saw Chief Flind waiting beside it.

  “Chief. I didn’t think I’d get to see you before we left.”

  “I’ve been busy, but not so busy to see off one of the best flying wrench turners I’ve had come through here.”

  “One of?” Blazer asked with a laugh.

  “Don’t get cocky. We’ll miss you here boy. Take care of yourself and your team.”

  “Thank you sir, I wouldn’t be here if it hadn’t been for your guidance.”

  “You want to thank me, keep those frigate boys from banging up all my hard work.”

  “Will do sir.”

  Blazer turned back to the fighter where Arion waited, completing his half of the preflight checks. Blazer climbed aboard and taking one last look around, secured his harness.

  For three annura he’d called this place home. Despite all the hardships and frustrations, he would miss this place. Securing his helmet, he remembered what he’d told the others after their first full cycle at the academy. This was the easy part. Now they had to go out there into the real universe and the real war. From here on in, it was all real, and death would be a constant companion.

  For the first time in ages Blazer wondered if they were ready. Taking a deep breath, he set himself and prepared to go, pushing the doubt aside. “All set Arion?”

  Arion’s cool reply was uncharacteristic of the man Blazer had grown up with. “All set back here. The sooner we leave this place the better. Too many memories.”

  Blazer finished the power-up and launch sequences. Once ready, he and the rest of the squadron taxied over to the launch tubes and prepared themselves.

  As one, the squadron launched, and proceeded out of the asteroid shell. When they entered open space, Blazer led his flight group towards the waiting wake ship. It would transport them to the edge of Gorvian territory.

  Blazer took one last look at the academy and keyed his link. “Wake Ship 1183, Monstero Nach Flight Zero Three, Flight of Three. Requesting docking instructions.”

  “Copy that Nach Zero Three. Transmitting flight path. Welcome to the fleet warriors, may you rise against all threats to the Confederation.”
