Big Thaw (Miami Jones Private Investigator Mystery Book 14),
p.29
She held up her glass and then took a sip, so I did the same. Then I looked out at the dark water and smelled the briny scent of home.
Danielle opened the hummus and fish dip and a packet of pita bread. She pulled off a piece and dipped it in the hummus. I watched her eat as she watched the water. Then she turned to me.
“What do you think you’ll do?” she asked.
“About what?”
“The house.” She smiled. “Build a nice big mansion like the neighbors? Now’s your chance.”
I turned in the direction of the wedding cake next door and then back.
“What would you like to do?” I asked.
Danielle sipped her wine. “I’d build it back the exact way it was.”
I sipped my wine and looked at the lights on the water, and for the first time in too long I felt a smile creep onto my lips.
“Exactly what I was thinking.”
