“Heed my point,” Adele said sharply.
Daniel grimaced. “Very well. Wirth did something that alerted the Doctor, and he proceeded to carve the Captain up—”
“He didn’t do it for fun,” Slane said sharply. “He wanted to know exactly how exposed he was. What Wirth had told us.”
“He cut Wirth’s throat when he was done,” Adele said. “He’d got the answers he wanted.”
Slane met her gaze. “Did those answers include your name?”
“I didn’t give it to Wirth.” She hesitated. “But if the Doctor was at the ball, then I’m linked to Wirth. And you are both linked to me. He must have seen me meeting with Wirth and afterwards, with the two of you. That is why we must leave the area, now. We’re compromised.”
Daniel turned on the seat to properly face her. “You say that with such…calmness. Do you really understand what you’re saying?”
“That we might be in danger? I do understand that, Daniel.”
“So, ye were right about the laddie, after all,” Slane said.
“That is immaterial,” Adele said sharply. “I made a mistake. I should have trusted my feelings completely and put Wirth on a night train back to Portsmouth.” She slumped back. “If he hadn’t met with me, he might still be alive.”
Daniel squeezed her hand silently.
“This will not happen again,” Adele said firmly, sitting up once more. “And besides, the Doctor also made a mistake, dealing with Wirth the way he did. Now we have a much shorter list of people who might be him.”
“You consider a ballroom full of eight hundred people to be a shorter list?” Daniel asked.
“As opposed to every man in Britain? And woman,” Slane added hastily.
“Very well,” Daniel said with a sigh. “Eight hundred people it is.”
“And I know exactly who to start with,” Adele said grimly. “Philip Cowden.”
“The journalist?” Daniel said, astonishment widening his eyes.
“And my oldest sister’s lover, for at least a year,” Adele said grimly.
Slane chuckled. “We can spread the man’s life on a blotter for ye sister to see, for sure.”
Daniel shrugged. “I suppose we must start somewhere. But you slid right past my point, Adele. The Doctor knows who you are now, almost for certain.” Worry made his voice hoarse.
“If he’s like every man with a heartbeat, he’s overlooked Becket completely,” Slane replied. “That’s why she got to see Wirth’s end and we didn’t. Even if the Doctor saw her with Wirth at the ball, he likely thinks she’s one of Wirth’s dalliances.”
“Maybe,” Daniel replied. “But I won’t risk Adele’s life on a possibility.”
Adele withdrew her hand from his. “It is my life to gamble with,” she said coolly. “Besides, I intend to find the Doctor before he finds me.”
The silence in the compartment lasted until they reached London.

The Indecent Agent
Trouble reaches out to Lady Adelaide from across the oceans.
Lady Adelaide Azalea Margaret de Morville, Mrs. Hugh Becket, English peer and British intelligence agent, receives an unexpected letter from her dear friend Isa Hass in the Cape Colony, which sends her dashing to Cape Town to confirm her suspicions about Isa and the death of Adele’s husband, three years ago.
Spy master William Melville insists that Daniel Bannister, Lord Leighton, accompany her. Adele complies, even though she resents Leighton’s company, for their nascent relationship ran aground some weeks before.
Adele’s return to Cape Town elicits memories both bitter and sweet, and unlocks the secrets surrounding her friend Isa, provoking a violent and deadly response from the shadowy figures who resent that exposure…

How to make a big difference!
Reviews are powerful.
Authors like me, without the financial muscle of a sleek New York publisher backing me, can’t take advertisements out in the subways and billboards of the world.
On the other hand, New York publishers would kill to get what I have: A committed and loyal group of readers.
Honest reviews of my books help bring them to the attention of other readers. If you enjoyed this book I would be grateful if you could spend just a few minutes leaving a review (it can be as short as you like) on the book’s page where you bought it.
