“No, I need you to come get me. He won’t let me leave.”
“Where are you?”
“Somebody’s coming. I gotta go. I’ll text you my location.”
“Demi, wait,” Sheba said, but she had already ended the call.
Sheba checked her messages and saw the text with the location from Demi. She quickly called Jody and Floyd, but they didn’t answer their phones.
“It’s Sheba. I’m sending you both the address where Demi is. I’m on my way there now. Meet me there when you get this message.”
Sheba got the gun she just got and went to get Demi from whoever was holding her. It wasn’t until Sheba was halfway to her destination that she realized she had been to that address before. It was Jordan’s house where Demi was being held.
“What’s she doing there?” was Sheba’s first question. But the closer she got, the madder she got, and the more it made sense to her. Sheba was sure that Jordan was the one Demi went to that night to get high for free. Jordan said that he knew her that first night Demi went missing, and there was something about the way he looked when Sheba said Demi was her cousin. And Jordan knowing she was her cousin made Sheba madder.
When she got there, Sheba didn’t see any cars, so she walked right up to the front door and kicked it open.
“Demi!”
“I’m back here!” Demi yelled.
When Sheba started toward the rear of the house, a man appeared in front of her with a gun in his hand.
“What you doing in here?”
Sheba raised her gun and kept walking toward him.
“I’m here to get my cousin,” she said and shot him once in the chest. “Demi!” she yelled as the man dropped his gun and slumped to the floor.
“I’m back here!”
The sound of Demi’s voice was coming from a room in the rear of the house. The door had a padlock on it. “Stand back, Demi,” Sheba said, shooting the padlock off.
Sheba opened the door. “You all right?”
Demi rushed out of the room. “I’m okay,” she said and hugged Sheba.
“Come on. I need to get you outta here.”
The two were on their way out of the house and had reached the kitchen when Jordan came in with a gun in his hand. He lowered it a little when he saw Sheba.
“What the fuck?” was all he could get out before Sheba shot him.
As Jordan went down from the shot to the stomach, Sheba picked up his gun and left the house with Demi. Once they reached the car and Demi was in, Sheba shut her door.
“I’ll be right back.”
When she got back inside, Jordan was on the floor, trying to pull himself up in a chair. Sheba saw that his cell phone was on the floor next to the chair, so she had to assume that he called his boys for help and that they would be there soon.
Sheba kicked the chair out of the way, and Jordan fell to the floor.
She stood over him and pointed her gun at his head. “You knew she was my cousin.”
Sheba shot Jordan once in the head and then twice in the chest with his own gun. She dropped the gun on his chest and left the house. As Sheba was driving away from Jordan’s house with Demi, she passed Jamarco on his way to the house.
She started to take Demi back to rehab, but then she thought better of that idea and took her to Miss Pearl’s house. What Demi needed more than counseling at that time was the love of her family, and there was no better place for her to be than with her grandmother.
Once she had Demi situated at the house and she promised to stay put and not run out on her grandmother, Sheba told Demi that she would be back. She went to tell Jody and Floyd that it was Jordan who had had Demi and that she had killed him and one of his boys.
“Then it ain’t over,” Jody said because Jordan’s crew would certainly retaliate.
“This shit is just getting started,” Floyd said.
