“We’ll take care that they’re all right, Alfred.” Dad kissed him on the cheek when he and mom stood up. “Do you think that the two of you could stay out of the hospital unless you’re working for a while? I don’t know how much more my heart can take of seeing you in one of those gowns.”

“I’ll try my best.” Dad took mom after she kissed him to get something to eat. Clay was told that he was going to be spending the night as they had had to put in a few stitches in his hand to sew it back up. When Alfred left with his parents after telling him that they’d bring him back something to eat, he looked at Lizzy. “Are you all right? I’m so sorry about your—”

She put her hand over his mouth. “Don’t be sorry about what happened. Ever. She brought this on by herself. To think of what extremes she went to in order to get my dad back to her boggles my mind.” He told her that she’d wanted money too. “Yes, well, she didn’t get anything she wanted, did she?”

After a few minutes of holding her, Lizzy started talking again. Telling him how she’d gotten to the hospital with his brother Trevor. Then she laughed.

“He drives like an old man.” Before he could tell her she was wrong about that, she got it. “Unless he was driving that way because he didn’t want anything to happen to us before we got to the hospital.”

“That’s what he was doing. I assure you, he doesn’t drive like an old man when he’s just by himself. He’s nuts.”

When his parents returned, he was feeling the pain of his wound. When they left him after eating Chinese food, Lizzy called the nurse and asked for pain meds for Clay. As soon as it hit his system, he was feeling much better. His last thought, as he went to sleep, was that he was the luckiest man in the world. He had a wonderful wife, a giving family and everything else that a man could want or hope for in life.
