“We better go eat,” he said, his meaning clear, “or we’ll miss breakfast.”
“I could lose a few pounds.”
“Umm. Sex or food…” He considered, making a little humming noise in the back of his throat. “No. I like you the way you are.” He released me, slapped me on my butt, and walked to the bath, pausing to stand naked in the doorway. “Breakfast, a walk, then sex. Besides, we only have a few days to ourselves before Sarah and Jas and Paz get here. I want to see the city with you, just the two of us.”
“Are you sure you want to be a part of this family?” I asked for the hundredth time.
“Family? You mean me, my daughter, your horse-loving, Internet-hacking, slightly whacky girls, the horses, the two crazy women in the house out back, the nearly three hundred family members, most I’ve yet to meet, the country life on the farm? That family? I’ve got to be nuts, but yeah. I do. I love you, Ashlee Ramsey. And I want you to be happy.”
“I am,” I said. “I am happy.”
