Soon enough, I sat back at the pilot’s chair as I replotted the course to Earth. It would take us months of foldspace travel to reach it. Through the interface plates, I could feel the Manifold Drive spinning up.
I thought about the wooden box in the galley, about the dead Throy we’d left behind, about everything that had happened since I’d stopped to take that piss along the Extraterrestrial Highway.
I grinned. We had won against Zorion, the Burnt Polarion. We were all alive. Who knew what really lay ahead of us? Whatever it was, I had a great crew and a wonderful ship.
Then the stars ahead began to ripple as space folded. Soon we’d be back in that gray non-space, heading for the blue world where this impossible adventure had started.
A second later, the Theron slipped into foldspace, carrying us toward whatever came next.
