“How long have I been gone?” Maddox said.
“Over three years,” Keith said. His voice was choked with emotion, as if he were on the verge of tears.
“It’s good to see you, old son,” Ludendorff said in a gruff voice. “What did you do? How did you disappear off the bridge? The last thing we remember was Grutch grabbing you. Did you kill him?”
“Not yet,” Maddox said.
They carried the captain aboard the shuttle. Keith piloted him to Victory. There, in the hangar bay, tired, exhausted, but oh, so intensely happy Captain Maddox staggered out. He no longer wore the spacesuit.
“Maddox, Maddox, Maddox!” Meta called out, rushing to him. She would have knocked him down, but she clutched him so hard that she kept that from happening. It was a bone-crushing grip.
Maddox found it hard to breathe. That breathing became even harder as Meta showered his face with wet kisses. Finally, he laughed and kissed her back on the mouth.
“Oh, Daddy, Daddy,” Jewel said.
Released by Meta, Maddox knelt beside Jewel. He hugged his little baby girl. She’d gotten so big. It was amazing. “I missed you, honey. I missed you so much. I love you.”
“I love you, too, Daddy. Don’t ever leave me again. Please, Daddy, don’t ever leave me again.”
Maddox tousled the hair on her head. She was so beautiful. Jewel so looked like Meta. He lifted her in his arm and then clutched Meta in his other arm. “It’s so good to be home. It’s so good to be among my family and friends. I’ve missed you all.”
“We’ve missed you,” Meta said.
Everyone cheered again.
The captain was back. Everything was going to be okay.
