  CHAPTER ONE

  Four months ago

Blair Gibson stood in one of the carefully curated model homes in Phase II of Wildwood's new development, Woodland Estates. The interior exuded an air of sophistication, from the plush furnishings to the subtle play of light that cascaded through the oversized windows. As she surveyed the living room, her eyes narrowed in both satisfaction and concern.

As the owner of her own real estate firm that specialized in staging and then selling homes, she had a deep passion for aesthetics. But Blair's involvement went far beyond simply selling properties. For this second phase, she had been hired to handle not only the interior design but also help market the entire thirty-home development. Her administrative assistant, Avery Martin, was a genius stager.

Without a doubt, Avery had outdone herself this time. Blair’s contract with Granger Development was her first big job as an entrepreneur, which meant she couldn’t afford to mess it up—not if she wanted a future in this business.

It was why every choice, from the color palette to the placement of decor, had been made with the intention of capturing the essence of luxury living. This model home was her masterpiece, a testament to her dedication to perfection.

However, her sense of accomplishment was tinged with a layer of unease when she spotted something that didn't quite belong. Subtle yet unmistakable, she spotted the discreetly placed security cameras that dotted the corners of the room. Her trained eye didn't miss a detail. The firm hired to do the work? Granger-Haygood Security Systems.

Blair knew about Jeff Granger and Zane Haygood, the owners of the firm specializing in intrusion alert systems. The problem? Jeff’s dad, Drew Granger—her boss—was the developer.

Thankfully, the security alert firm’s reputation was one of excellence, a reputation that shouldn't be taken lightly. But as she studied the cameras, she couldn't help but worry how their presence might disrupt the delicate balance she had worked so hard to achieve. No homeowner wanted to be reminded that they were being watched and possibly recorded!

The cameras, while undoubtedly effective, threatened to disrupt the cohesion that was essential for potential buyers to envision themselves in these luxurious surroundings. She couldn't afford any missteps that might undermine the marketing strategy she had meticulously crafted. This job was her life.

Resolute in her decision, Blair knew what she needed to do. She reached for her phone and dialed a familiar number. The call connected, and a voice she knew well filled her ear.

"Drew Granger," the voice greeted her.

"Mr. Granger, it's Blair," she began, her tone firm. "I need to talk to you about something important."

"Blair, please call me Drew. Mr. Granger was my dad’s name. Now what's on your mind?" His voice held a note of curiosity rather than annoyance.

Blair took a deep breath, choosing her words carefully. "I've been reviewing the security measures for one of the model homes, and I've noticed the many cameras."

There was a pause on the other end of the line, and Blair could almost sense the wheels turning in her boss’ head. "Yes, we've partnered with Jeff and Zane's firm to ensure the safety of the properties. Is there a problem?”

Blair hesitated, her gaze flickering to the cameras once more. "I understand their importance, Mr. Granger, I mean Drew, but these systems, while discreet, are still noticeable. They disrupt the flow that I've worked so hard to create in this model home."

There was another moment of silence before he responded. "Blair, you know as well as I do that security is a top priority, especially in a high-end development like this."

Blair sighed, her fingers tightening around her phone. "I'm not disputing their need, but these cameras are a potential distraction. Buyers need to see the beauty and elegance of these homes, not be reminded of potential threats."

"I value your input. It’s why I hired you, but this is non-negotiable. We can't compromise on safety."

Blair closed her eyes briefly, grappling with her frustration. She understood its importance, but she also understood the value of presentation. The delicate balance between the two was proving to be a challenge she hadn't anticipated.

“I totally understand. It's just that I don't want anything to disrupt the vision that you’ve created.”

“I appreciate you worrying about me, but trust me it will be fine. I'll talk to Jeff and Zane about making everything even more discreet. We'll work together to find a solution that ensures security without compromising our vision."

Blair's heart lifted at Drew's willingness to find common ground. She was grateful for his understanding and support. "Thank you, Drew. I appreciate that."

"We're a team, Blair. We'll make this work." Drew said with assurance.

As she hung up the phone, Blair's apprehension began to ease. She knew that finding a balanced solution wouldn't be easy, but she was determined to protect the essence of the development she had poured her heart into.

Filled with renewed resolve, she redirected her focus toward the model home, her thoughts already abuzz with concepts for striking a compromise.

Jeff Granger stood in the living room of the model home, tension zinging through him as he studied the position of the security devices. His dad had called and said Blair was not happy. Since his father was a reasonable man, Jeff agreed to see what he could do.

The sunlight cast a warm glow into the living room, highlighting its grandeur. But Jeff's attention wasn't focused on the architectural beauty; it was fixed on Blair Gibson, the real estate agent who seemed to be scrutinizing their alert system with a critical eye. He debated asking for her credentials regarding the electronic devices but decided against it. Antagonizing the woman his father thought was amazing wouldn’t solve any problem.

His annoyance simmered beneath the surface as he watched Blair's hazel eyes narrow in contemplation. He had expected some level of skepticism, given her reputation for clean lines and elegance, but he couldn't shake the feeling that she didn't fully appreciate the intricacy of their work. Those discreetly placed cameras were designed to enhance security without compromising the visual appeal. Yet, it seemed like Blair couldn't see past their functional purpose.

His partner, Zane, stepped next to Jeff and nudged him with his elbow. “What's got your feathers ruffled?” he telepathed.

Jeff's jaw tensed as he spared a glance in Blair's direction before turning back to Zane. "It's just that she doesn't seem to get it,” he said softly enough so that Blair couldn’t hear them. “We put a lot of effort into making these systems seamless, and all she seems to care about is how they disrupt the looks of the place.”

Zane chuckled softly. "Well, she does have a point. We can't ignore the fact that appearance matters in this business."

“I know that.”

Jeff's irritation deepened, but before he could voice his continued frustration, Zane's tone grew serious. "Look, I get it. But remember, not everyone sees the world the way we do. Security might not be her top priority, but that doesn't mean she doesn't appreciate our work in her own way."

Jeff grumbled, his pride wounded, despite knowing that Zane was right.

Blair stepped over to them, and Jeff’s cock stiffened. What the hell? She worked for his dad. Nothing more. At least he hoped it was nothing more.

“Now that you’ve seen the position of our furnishings, can you take another look at the placement of the cameras?” She seemed to be working hard to keep her voice calm.

They'd installed the cameras after the furniture was in place, but arguing wouldn’t get him anywhere. “Sure. We’ll check the outside ones too.”

Not wanting to get into a full-blown argument, he spun around and headed outside, leaving Zane to study the interior. The first words out of his best friend's mouth were an apology for Jeff’s rude behavior. Really? The woman had the nerve to tell them that his job wasn’t up to snuff. What was he supposed to do? Agree with her? To hell with that.

It wasn’t as if clients hadn’t asked him and Zane to change things in the past. It happened all the time, but when it came from Blair, it set Jeff off for some reason.

Outside, he studied their system. A thief would be hard-pressed to even find the alarms let alone disable them.

“You have to admit she’s pretty hot.”

Zane had snuck up on him, and Jeff hadn’t even noticed. Now he knew something was wrong. Werewolves had excellent hearing. He spun around and huffed. “Whatever. This isn't the time for that."

Zane chuckled again, shaking his head. "I'm just saying, maybe if you take your eyes off our systems for a second, you might notice what a catch she is.”

Jeff was well aware that Zane had an eye for beautiful women, and while Jeff appreciated Blair's looks, he couldn't afford to let his partner's playful comments influence his thoughts. Besides, his own instincts were far more complex than mere attraction. There seemed to be a connection between him and Blair that was messing with his head, hinting at the possibility of a deeper bond. And that was something he didn’t want—at least not right now.

Sure, he and Zane often shared women. Wildwood, Montana was short on them, and sharing was commonplace. But Blair? The three of them would never work. Blair was too focused—just like him. Not only that, she seemed a bit too uptight to be willing to be with two men. A threesome wasn’t for everyone.

Be honest for once. Jeff’s inner wolf was trying to tell him that Blair might be his mate, a notion that would complicate things to no end.

“We’re here to ensure the safety of this Development, not to indulge in distractions," Jeff replied firmly. “This is one of Dad’s biggest ventures, don’t forget.”

“I know that very well, but sometimes a little fun can be a good thing,” Zane said. “Let’s go back to the store and see if we can come up with a solution.”

  “Fine.”

They both piled into Jeff’s truck and took off for their office on the edge of town. Not only did they have a showroom for their gadgets, as Zane called them, but they also had a huge factory in the back where they assembled their systems. Attached to the showroom was a room that housed three people whose job it was to monitor any incoming alarm alerts. They would report the intrusion to the sheriff’s department, and if needed, follow-up.

A minute later, he pulled onto the main road. Normally, he took criticism really well, but coming from this upstart of a woman bothered him. “You know what gets me?”

“That a rhetorical question?” Zane asked.

“Fuck you. Yes, it was. It's that…that these systems are our expertise. It's frustrating when someone doesn't see the effort we've put into them."

"I get it, but let's not forget we're a team, and part of being a team is working with different perspectives. Blair might not fully understand our world, but that just means we need to help her see it in a way that resonates with her."

His easy-going partner never let anything get to him. Jeff’s dad often commented that he should act more like his best friend. Jeff had tried, but he wasn’t wired that way.

“You’re right,” Jeff admitted. “We have to find a way to bridge the gap between our expertise and Blair's priorities. Our ultimate goal has to be the safety of the Development and its residents,” And yes, his father had pounded that philosophy into him from the moment he gave the two of them the contract to do the lucrative job.

Zane chuckled. “You sound like your dad—not that that’s a bad thing, because it’s not. But don’t forget, there won’t be any residents if the homes don’t look good.”

Jeff looked over at him. “Are you siding with Blair now?”

“No. I’m just trying to be reasonable.”

Jeff might have been more reasonable if his inner wolf's instincts weren’t stirring. Stupid animal! Why did his dick have to get stiff when Blair was near?

Zane was a werewolf too, but he didn’t seem to be affected in the least. Right now, their company was doing well, and the last thing either of them needed was to have a woman come between them.

Jeff hadn't missed the way Blair was studying Zane. It was possible she was interested in his partner, whereas she only seemed to have scorn for Jeff. Was it because his dad was the developer? She might assume they only received the contract because of nepotism. If she knew Drew Granger, she’d know that would never happen.

After pulling behind the big steel structure that was their workplace, Jeff cut the engine. “I guess we could go over the designs again to see if we can change anything.” He tried to say that as unemotionally as possible, but he was certain he’d failed.

Once inside the shop, Zane pulled out the schematics. “Let’s see if we can make Blair happy and not compromise the security.”

  “Good luck.”

  CHAPTER TWO

Blair turned to her assistant, Avery Martin. “It's bad, isn't it?" she asked, her frustration evident.

Avery, a young woman with a keen eye for detail, walked around the room, her expression thoughtful as she studied the surveillance equipment that had become the center of Blair's concerns. "It's not that bad, but I wouldn't live here knowing someone was watching me," Avery replied candidly. She glanced around the room, her gaze sharp and observant. "Did you look in the bedrooms? Or the bathrooms? They didn't put anything there, did they?"

Blair's shoulders tensed at the thought, and she shook her head. "No, they didn't. Admittedly, the cameras are primarily pointed toward the front door, but still…" Her voice trailed off as she considered the implications.

Because she was responsible for the interior design and marketing of the development, this was her chance to prove her worth and secure her place in the industry. She couldn't let anything compromise that.

Avery continued her examination, looking at every corner of the room. "What's this?" she asked, her voice holding a note of concern.

Blair followed Avery's gaze to the entrance hall mirror, a piece she had personally selected for its elegance and impact. "What's what?" Blair inquired. She rushed over to her assistant. Her heart raced as she tried to spot whatever had caught Avery's attention.

Avery's finger pointed to a thin strip of wire that was discreetly placed along the side of the mirror. "This wire on the side," Avery replied, her eyes narrowing as she studied it intently.

Blair's stomach dropped as her fingers reached out to gently touch it. "Shit," she muttered under her breath. Carefully, she ran her hand along the side until her fingertips brushed against a small square object attached to the mirror's frame. "I think it might be a recording device."
