He shrugged as if that was of no consequence. “I’ll find another way. The Whine and Cheese ladies are already on it. I still want the headquarters.” He gazed into her eyes. “But I want something else a whole lot more.”
Her heart ached because she could tell where this was going and it wouldn’t end well. “Zane…”
“I want to be with you. Occupying the same geographical area, the same house, the same bedroom. That place is filled with memories of you, of us. I could no more turn it into a raptor headquarters than take flight like those birds I’m caring for.”
She swallowed the lump of misery lodged in her throat. “It’s…it’s not possible. My work is here.”
“I know.” His voice was cheerful, as if she hadn’t just shot him down. “I wondered if you might be fresh out of ideas for fixing that issue.”
“There’s no way to fix it.”
“I wouldn’t say that. You’ve done a lot of heavy lifting recently, so now it’s my turn to be brilliant. This is the digital age. Find out if your boss will let you work remote from Montana.”
“Oh!” It was an outrageous concept, but not an impossible one. She took a breath to steady herself. “I never thought of that.”
“Because you didn’t want to come home. But now I’m asking you to.”
Aha. His timing wasn’t random. “You’ve been talking to my mom.”
“So have you. From all reports, you’ve been slaying dragons right and left. If any are still hanging around, we’ll fight them together.”
Coming from Zane McGavin, it was a solemn pledge of loyalty. He wanted to be her knight in shining armor and a girl couldn’t ask for more than that. Her doubts fell away as she gazed into his eyes, blue as the Montana sky. “I love you.”
“That’s why I’m here. I love you, too, always have. We’ve loved each other since we were three years old and we’d be fools to let go of it now. Come home with me, Buttercup.”
Home. She’d been searching for it for so long and it was right there where she’d left it. Where she’d left him. His words flowed over her, filling her heart with joy and hope. “I will.” She looked up at him, her best friend in the world and the only man she’d ever love. “I will.”
“Thank you.” With a sigh of gratitude, he kissed her.
When his lips met hers, she closed the door on a past filled with uncertainty and pain and welcomed a future shining with joy and all the love she’d ever need.

About the Author
New York Times bestselling author Vicki Lewis Thompson’s love affair with cowboys started with the Lone Ranger, continued through Maverick, and took a turn south of the border with Zorro. She views cowboys as the Western version of knights in shining armor, rugged men who value honor, honesty and hard work. Fortunately for her, she lives in the Arizona desert, where broad-shouldered, lean-hipped cowboys abound. Blessed with such an abundance of inspiration, she only hopes that she can do them justice.
