“What was that all about?” Remo demanded, jumping back from the shattering glass and collapsing body. “How did he know who you were?” He glanced to the table where Hahn had pointed. His face fell. “Wait a second…”

  But Chiun was already on the move. Whirling to the butcher-block table, the old man snatched up the lone envelope that Herr Hahn had left there.

  “I have waited enough in this nation that is afraid to commit to cowardice,” he insisted. “I wish to go home.”

  In a swirl of kimono skirts, he headed for the door.

  “That was one of them, wasn’t it?” Remo called after him. “He had one of those goddamn silver envelopes you’ve been stuffing inside those gold envelopes these past few months. I know it. The way you just jumped on it, I just know it.” He shook his head, shoulders sagging. “So is this something I’m gonna live to regret?”

  At the cabin door, Chiun paused. When he turned, his parchment face was drawn in lines of deep reflection.

  “Perhaps,” he admitted. There was a mischievous glint in his hazel eyes. “If you are lucky.”

  And like a silent whisper, the old Korean slipped out into the cold mountain air.
