I nod. “Thank you. It’s nice to no longer be under suspicion. I know I’m weird, maybe even a little eccentric, but I did not kill those kids.”

She nods. “I know that now. Everybody knows that now. I also know it wasn’t just the police who accused you, but the entire town thought you did it. You’ve essentially been blackballed for the last three years and for that, I’m sorry.”

  “Apology accepted,” I say curtly.

“Anyway, I don’t want to keep you long. I just wanted to come here in person and let you know we were wrong for accusing you like that.”

“Thank you for coming, Detective,” I say.

She nods and turns around to walk the other way, back down the hill. I watch as she goes, relieved to finally be off the list and no longer a suspect. As soon as she disappears, I head back into my house.

I walk to the kitchen, grab the plate of food out of the microwave and the cup of water from the table. I take them to my dark room. Once inside the room I set the food down and lift the rug on the ground, revealing a trapdoor. I pull it open. It creaks loudly.

I pick the food back up and make my way carefully down the stairs. It’s pitch black down here. I reach my hand overhead and find the string to turn on the light. I’m blinded by the brightness, but my eyes adjust quickly.

In the corner is the nineteen-year-old girl. I know her name now. Becca. She’s bound and gagged, tied to a post in the corner of the room. She sees me and scrambles to the corner, afraid.

“I’m not going to hurt you,” I tell her. “I brought you some food. But if you want it, you’re gonna have to play nice.”
