  “Oomph!”

She opened her eyes and looked up as strong hands wrapped around her upper arms and a hard, rock-like chest pressed against her breasts. But when she focused, there wasn’t a face in front of her. Instead, she saw only tanned skin and muscles. Lots of muscles!

The fingers that were wrapped around her arms tightened slightly as she lifted her eyes higher. But the image in front of her couldn’t be right! She blinked, trying to re-focus her eyes, or get her brain back in gear. Because…it couldn’t be! There was no way that…it couldn’t be!

“Tazir!” she gasped. The man on the balcony! Broad shoulders, arrogant stance…her eyes hadn’t been playing tricks on her! “It was you!”

Her fingers uncurled from fists, sliding over bare skin. Had he just come from swimming in the ocean? Goodness, his skin was so cold…and yet she could feel the heat from his muscles simmering below the surface. Unfortunately, warning bells blared in her mind.

“Brielle!” he groaned, shifting as a couple tried to pass them on the sidewalk. He moved so that they were off the pathway and…goodness, they were practically hidden by the lush vegetation! The sun no longer warmed her skin. Instead, it was Tazir that warmed her. She suddenly realized that they were touching from her breasts all the way down to her knees. She didn’t care about the water seeping into her sundress because Tazir was holding her! She’d dreamed about this moment so many times over the last five years, never thinking to see him again!

“What are you doing here?” she asked in a whisper, afraid that anything louder might shatter this precious moment. It had happened so often in her dreams. She’d wake up from a beautiful dream, then his arms would vanish and her heart would shatter all over again.

For a brief moment, there was a reciprocal heat in his dark eyes and his hands tightened around her arms. She could feel his body’s reaction and knew that there was something wrong there, but, she couldn’t figure out why it was so wrong to feel so good.

“I have meetings,” he told her. His answer was vague, as if he didn’t want her to know anything more than just the superficial details. Just like old times, she thought.

“Well,” she licked her lips, her eyes darting lower to stare at his mouth, but then she shifted. This wasn’t right, she told herself. Tazir wasn’t good for her. She’d spent the last five years trying to get over him. She couldn’t, wouldn’t, step right back into his arms and endure another cruel and unexplained disappearance. He’d disappear just like he’d done five years ago and Brielle didn’t know if she could pick up the pieces again. “I have to go,” she said. “It was nice seeing you again.”

  “Why?”

She flinched, stunned by the ferocity in his voice. But then she blinked, looking into his eyes and tried to understand what he was asking. “Why what?”

For a long moment, neither moved. She stared up at him, sensing his inner turmoil. Was that anger she felt from him? Slowly, her fingers curled away from his chest and she stepped back.

At the separation of their bodies, his features hardened into granite. “Nothing,” he finally replied, releasing her arms and stepping back, giving her space. “You look good,” he said softly.

“Thank you,” Brielle replied, bowing her head slightly. Then she realized what she was doing and lifted her head, glaring at him. Reviving her self-esteem, she inhaled slowly and deeply, then let the breath out. When she looked up at him this time, she was more composed. With a firm nod, she said, “Have a nice day,” then cautiously stepped around him, careful not to touch any part of him. Once had been enough.

With as much dignity as she could muster, Brielle walked down the sidewalk towards the…well, she wasn’t sure where she was going. Just away. Away from Tazir. Away from the pain. Away from the betrayal and the memories.

Unfortunately, the confusing wash of horrid emotions followed her. But she couldn’t do that again! She wasn’t going to wallow in the misery any longer! She was over him! She was stronger now!

Instead of heading to her suite to hide for the rest of the day, Brielle walked into the open air dining room and asked for a cup of coffee. The waitress smiled and, a moment later, brought over an entire pot.

Brielle sat for a long moment, ignoring the books and magazines in her bag as she tried to come to terms with seeing Tazir again.

So, it had been him on the balcony last night. Brielle didn’t like that Tazir was here at the same resort. But what could she do about it? She could leave, but Luke would be devastated and…!

Luke! Good grief, she hadn’t even thought about Luke. She checked her watch and realized that she’d been sitting here for an hour.

But Luke was…Tazir’s son! Five years ago, when she’d realized she was pregnant, Brielle hadn’t known how to get in touch with Tazir. She’d gone over their conversations in her mind and realized she didn’t even know his last name! They’d spent hours talking about politics and art, literature and their childhoods. But he’d never mentioned his last name. Or where he was from. She knew that he had two younger sisters, that he’d tormented them mercilessly over the years, and that they were married with children. But she didn’t know where he’d tormented them. She knew that he wasn’t from the United States. She knew that he spoke seven languages. But she’d had no way to tell him of her pregnancy since he’d blocked her text messages!

But now…now he was here. And Luke was here!
