He leans down and gives me a peck on the lips.
“Who would have thought a Devil and a Rebel.” He curls his lips in a smile
“Yup, who would have thought.” I grin, kissing him back.
Chapter 30
DEAR DIARY,
From the moment I laid eyes on Grim, I felt this spark. This electric current passing between us. There was something so tender about the way he looked at me behind his dark, terrifying eyes. He wasn’t what most women would consider attractive. To be honest, he was right down ugly and scary looking with the teardrop tattoos that covered half of his face that night when he stopped off on the side of the road to help me.
He didn’t know that I was planted there to bait him. He didn’t know I was sent to be his downfall. Grim had a lot of hurt he was carrying around, and I was just the good deed he had been hoping for to lighten some of the load he was carrying.
I thought to myself, it would be easy to get him to sleep with me. It’d be easy to crawl in his bed and leave as soon as I had the information the Devils Rejects wanted. Mainly Winston, but still... I thought I could do this one thing, and then I would finally have my freedom.
I never expected Grim to look at me like he did and fall in love, but I did. I fell hard and fast. There was just this something about his dark soul that called to mine. Like maybe somehow through all the bad we could heal one another—that we could bring each other back to life.
That man had given me more love in a few days than anyone has given me my whole life. I don’t know how to break his heart without breaking mine. I don’t know how to give him up now that I have his baby growing inside me. I keep hoping that maybe Grim will save me because I sure as hell can’t save myself.
But maybe Grim isn’t meant to save me, maybe I am supposed to save him...
Chapter 31
Grim
“CHRIST, BROTHER, IT’S good to be home,” Romeo tells me as he rolls up a joint.
“You can say that again,” Rebel agrees with him as he sits out a few jars of shine.
“Give me that, dad.” Nash swipes the joint from his fingers, and I think Romeo is having a stroke because the fucker is frozen and not even breathing.
“What did you call me?”
“You heard me.” He punches his father in the arm and Goddamn them, they bring a tear to my eye.
It’s been one hell of a long hard ride over the years, but somehow, we came out of this fucked up adventure alive. It hasn’t been easy but as I kick back and toke on a joint with a jar of moonshine in hand, I gotta say it’s been a decent life.
My daughter is back home where she belongs, and my grandkids are a part of my everyday life. “We’ve been thinking and talking.” I motion between Romeo and myself.
“Yeah, about what?” Rebel asks, taking a long hard drag off the puff puff pass.
“Stop bogartin,’” Nash tells him.
“Shut up, both of ye, Goddamnit. I’m trying to tell you fuckers something important.”
“Damn. Alright,” Rebel says, shaking his head.
“The time has come for you and Rebel to fully step up and take ye places at the head of the club. Romeo and me are retiring. It’s time. You’ve both earned it and it’s what Slim always wanted.”
“It’s what we have always wanted,” Romeo tacks on.
“What, you two gonna go off and hit the road like Thelma and Louise,” Rebel jokes.
“Not a bad idea. Lot of pussy out there untapped,” Romeo says with a smirk.
Horny bastard.
“Yeah well, I ain’t drivin’ off no cliff for your ass, no matter how cute the girls upstairs all say it is,” I tease him.
The fucker laughs. “I knew you’d been checking out my ass.”
“Stop, I can’t handle how cute you two are. Like an old married fuckin’ couple,” Nash says. “If we’re done here, I wanna go home and fuck my wife.”
“Hey, that’s my daughter you’re talking about,” I snap.
“Well shit, if I had her at home, I’d be in a hurry too,” Romeo says and winks at Nash.
Nash shakes his head. “Fucking geezer.”
“Who you callin’ a geezer?” Romeo grins at him.
“You, you sick old fuck,” Rebel says with a shake of his head and we all laugh.
I don’t know what the future will hold but whatever comes our way, I know we’ll be ready. We ride free or die trying...The Black Rebel Riders’ MC.
Epilogue
Sara
Some years later
“HE KEEPS ASKING TO see you,” my mom tells me, squeezing my hand.
“I’m glad you called.”
“Well, I’ll leave you to it. Just try not to get him too roused. The dementia is hard on him and he gets so easily confused.”
“I promise.” I offer my mother a faint smile. I know this is hard on her. I can’t imagine being in her shoes, knowing her father will most likely die any day now.
My grandpa, Grim is one tough bastard but even he can’t fight time. I am only glad that after all we have endured that he has had this long with us. He’s survived some crazy shit. We all have in our own way though. It has only made us stronger.
Entering his room, I smile and want to cry at all the photos that surround him. He has a picture of his best friend, Romeo, next to his bed. When Romeo died it was hard on us all, but the fun-loving man went out doing what he loved. He had a heart attack while some chick was riding him. It sounds gross to talk about my grandpa like that but that was who my grandfather was, he was a womanizer and held true to himself till the end.
I know Grim has missed him something terrible.
Mom says he asks for him all the time.
He looks over at me when I take the seat next to his bed.
“Gypsy, you came for me,” he whispers and touches his weathered hand to my cheek.
I don’t have the heart to tell him I’m not her. Doing so could upset him greatly.
“Yeah, it’s me,” I tell him softly, stroking his cheek as he clings to my hand.
“I knew you’d come.” He coughs.
“There is nowhere I would rather be.”
“You are still just as beautiful.”
“And you are every bit as handsome as the day I met you,” I say, running my knuckle over his faded tattoos on his face.
“I couldn’t move on till I saw ye face one last time,” he confesses.
“I know. I’m here, and I’m not going anywhere until you are ready.”
“I love you, Kara Marie.”
“I love you too, Jack ‘Grim’ Jones.”
He sighs, letting out a short breath of contentment. His chest rattles and a smile washes over his face as he takes his final breath.
“Oh god, Mom!” I cry out and she rushes in.
“Is he?”
I nod as tears blind me and I see a blurry vision of her collapsing to her knees.
“He thought I was your mother,” I tell her.
“I know. He kept asking for her. Kept calling her name. It was the only way to get him to let go. I knew bringing you here, when he saw you he’d think he was seeing her.”
I sink down to the floor and wrap my arms around her, hating that we have to say goodbye to the man who lived his life to provide for us.
A man who lived to ride free or die trying...
He may be gone now but his memory and his legacy will always remain.
“Come on. Let’s go break the news,” she tells me, wiping at her eyes.
I accompany her to the Roadhouse where everyone our Black Rebel Rider MC family is waiting for us.
When we walk in the mood is somber as they take in our demeanor.
My father steps forward and pulls mom into a hug.
Rebel wipes at his eyes as Chelle links her arms around his waist.
Truth and Tread embrace.
My brother punches the wall and hits the bar for a drink.
Danny takes me in his arms. “I’m so sorry, Sara. I know how close the two of you have been these past few years.” Both of my grandpas and I grew close after the whole Marek incident. If not for them, I don’t think Danny and I would have made it, but they stood by us and gave advice when needed. They put Danny in his place a few times too. God, I miss them both.
We all lost a great man today.
WE BURIED MY GRANDPA on a rainy day next to his best friend, Romeo, right next to the Roadhouse they both loved so much. Some say the two old buzzards haunt the place. Lifting skirts, breaking bottles, opening doors. We hear all kinds of wild tales. I haven’t experienced it for myself but I can only hope that one day I will see them again.
The End.
Bonus Scene
Rebel
Drag Creek, Kentucky
Taking a hard drag off my cigarette, I stop in my tracks, looking at the man next to me. My brother. He’s really home for good. Too fucking bad it took our mother’s death and his daughter being taken to bring Striker’s ass back to Drag Creek, but I’m glad he’s here. The years we spent apart I felt a piece of me was missing and now with him at my side running the club, standing in the steel toed boots of the men who raised us, I feel whole.
Flecks of grey are peppered through his dark hair. We aren’t getting any younger. Every damn day he looks more like Romeo.
Snow falls around us, illuminating the ground. As the wind whips around us, I feel trapped in a fucking snow globe. A real Hallmark moment if you will. The frigid air nips at my cheeks as Axel, Abel, and Cole select a tree. Snow caps the top of the massive pine and I wonder how in the hell the damn thing will fit in the bar. I never thought I would see this day. All of us together doing something so Goddamned mundane as cutting down a Christmas tree for the Roadhouse but here we are one big fuckin’ happy family.
My brother looks over to me and smiles. Another thing I never thought I’d see again. There has been a lot of bad blood between us, but we are looking forward and leaving the past where it belongs. With Grim and Romeo retired it is up to us to continue to grow this club and leave something for our boys to inherit. I never thought I’d live this long let alone have a family of my own. However, here I stand years later after losing Rumor the horrible way that I did a changed man, because of Chelle and the love she gives me so freely.
Looking up at the sky I wonder if Rumor ever looks down on me and if she is proud of the man her death made me. I never deserved her, but she was mine, loving me with her pure heart. Chelle understands the scars that have marked my heart. She knows that one day even though I’ve made peace with that part of my life I want to see Sarah again in the hereafter. I don’t know if Heaven has a place for a sinner like me, but I go to church every Sunday all the same.
My brother’s hand comes down on my shoulder in a tight squeeze. “She’s happy for you, man. She’d have wanted this for you. For all of us. Karly thinks about her often and how different things might have gone if she were still here.”
I nod and take one last puff before snuffing the cherry out.
“Right. When did you grow to be so wise?”
“I’ve always been smart, cocksucker.”
“Whatever, grandpa.” I flick my finger at one of his gray patches of hair.
“Fuck off,” he growls, and I smirk.
“What? Don’t like being called grandpa?”
“It’s Grampy,” Cole yells with a chuckle and I shake my damn head.
“Won’t be long before you’re a grandpa too, old man. Harley set a date yet?” My asshole of a brother smirks at me.
“New Years.” I didn’t think the fucker had it in him, but Reaper, my daughter’s man did as I asked. Brought me the head of that bastard, Tiny Leone. I promised my blessing and I gave it. Never fucking thought I’d marry my daughter off to a motherfuckin’ Devils Reject but things have changed. Our clubs have found peace. We’re trying to do things differently. My boys will be headed to Texas soon, after the holidays to start a new charter, that consists of both Black Rebels and Devils Rejects. Axel says they are calling themselves the Black Rebel Devils MC.
“You boys gonna cut that tree down or are you trying to get dick bite,” Striker grits at our sons rubbing his hands together for warmth.
“The fuck is dick bite?” I question.
“Frostbite of the dick, motherfucker. Give me a cigarette,” he demands, blowing out a breath that fogs up the lens of his glasses.
“I thought you quit.” I pull the pack out of the inner pocket of my cut and shake him one out.
“I did.” He flashes me a smile accepting the lighter I hold out to him next.
“You old asses just gonna stand there and watch or were ye planning on actually helping?” Abel yells.
WALKING INTO THE HOUSE it’s quiet. I’m still not used to the silence. Abel still technically lives at home, but he never stays here. He’s always off doing his own thing. Chelle is mad at me too. Hates that I am sending our sons to Texas, but it’s for the best. Axel has pending charges and Abel will go wherever his brother is, so it only makes sense to send them. It was my brother’s idea and I agree with him.
“Honey, I’m home,” I call out as I kick my boots off and shrug my jacket and cut off, hanging both in the coat closet. I’m met with more silence. I move through the house to the kitchen. Usually, my wife keeps me a plate warm in the oven but tonight there is nothing. Not even leftovers in the fridge. Damn, she must be angrier than I thought. My stomach growls and I fix myself a ham sandwich. As I walk through the house eating my late-night snack, I can hear the TV on in the bedroom. I go to open the bedroom door and it’s locked. I knock once. “Come on, Chelle, you can’t stay mad forever.”
The volume lowers on the TV.
I knock again. “Let me in. Final warning. You know what happened last time,” I warn. She pulled this shit once before and I knocked the damn thing off the hinges. I start to kick it in when it swings open and my wife stands on the other side with a hand on her hip.
“Idiot,” she grumbles and gets back under the covers.
“But I’m your idiot.” I smirk.
Bonus scene
Karly
“Oh, my goodness, just look at them,” I coo over my new grandbabies. Sara and Hades are here for Christmas along with their adopted son, CT.
“This is Kara, and this is Marie.” My daughter beams.
My heart melts. I can’t stop the tears. “After my mother?”
“Yeah. I thought Gypsy needed someone to carry on her name. You know,” she tells me, and I pull her in for a hug as I nod.
“I love it. It’s perfect. Everything is just so damn perfect. I can’t handle it.” Sara rolls her eyes.
We have a had a rocky time since she married Hades against my wishes, but we are on the way to repairing our relationship. I love my daughter and only want her to have the best possible life. I don’t care for her husband. I know he’s not a great man, but he does love her, and she looks so happy. I study Hades as he watches over her and their children and he looks at her like her father, Striker, stares at me with nothing but undying love. My husband’s hands rests on my shoulders. He dips his head down and kisses my hair.
My father and his, Grim and Romeo, are seated on the couch next to one another like a pair of old hateful farts with scowls on their faces. It might have to do with the fact that Sara insisted everyone wear an ugly Christmas sweater for the family photos she is demanding we take. But the minute Sara places a baby in each of their arms I watch as they both soften. My father chuckles as one of the girls fills her diaper and it leaks onto Romeo’s lap. He’s gagging and begging for someone to take her from him. My father says, “Don’t act like you haven’t had worse on ye, like some of them things I have seen you taking home lately. Ain’t that right, sweetheart.” He holds the twin up that he is holding and spit-up projectile vomits from her onto his beard.
We are all laughing till we cry only I think my Dad and Romeo have real tears. Sara is on the floor howling in laughter as she tries to get the baby bag open. I look over to see Cole snapping pictures with his camera and I look up at my husband and smile. This moment is everything. This is all I need.
