Aric decided to let them keep their secrets. It wasn’t a time for questioning. He had a family to love.

  Epilogue

  Two years later

  In awe, they all watched the monitor. It was just a tiny motion really, only detectable by ultrasound but every pair of eyes was fastened on what they saw there.

  “It looks like a jellybean,” Kenny said, her eyes dancing with glee.

  Lyric giggled. “More like a bean, a red bean!”

  Suddenly, Kenny gasped. She looked at Lyric who was standing right beside her. Both girls stared at each other wide-eyed and then drew their attention back to the monitor.

  “There is another one!” they said in unison.

  The doctor was startled as were the expectant parents. A flurry of activities followed the announcement and two minutes later, everything calmed down.

  In truth, two distinct red beans or jelly beans, according to how the girls described what they saw, became apparent on the screen.

  “Twins!” Aric murmured. “Wow!”

  The girls were elated. They held on to each and bounced around and squealed in delight.

  And Candace was excited, barely able to think clearly. That warm, snug feeling radiated throughout her entire body. She was carrying two babies. Happy tears cascaded down her cheeks.

  “Mommy is such a baby.” Kenny rolled her eyes and hugged Candace fiercely.

  “Thank you,” Candace stuck her tongue out at the girl, in spite of her tears.

  Everyone laughed.

  The doctor cleared his throat. “Mr. and Mrs. Simmons, your daughters are absolutely correct. You, Mrs. Simmons, are having twins.”

  “We are going to have two brothers!” Lyric proclaimed.

  “Yes, two cute little brothers,” Kenny agreed.

  Aric eyed his daughters. “And how would you know they are boys?” he asked. “They could both be girls or a boy and a girl, you know?”

  The girls looked at him as if he were a particularly dull student in class.

  “They are boys, dad,” Kenny said slowly.

  Lyric only smiled as if she knew something they didn’t.

  Candace reached out and squeezed Aric’s hand. There was no use arguing with the girls when their minds were made up. If they decided their siblings were going to be boys, then, it remained to be seen. Truth be told, she had a feeling they were boys, too.

  “And wouldn’t that be just perfect?” She smiled coyly.

  They would be the perfect addition to her wonderful family. In the last two years, she couldn’t have been any happier. Aric was the sweetest, lovable, loving and kind husband and the most amazing father to the girls. He loved both equally and never failed to show them all how much they meant to him. The girls continued to grow incredibly closer and sometimes, such as now, Candace wondered if they could read each other’s mind.

  Perhaps, they could.

  She didn’t mind. They were sisters, after all. Holding on to Aric’s hand, she beamed down at the girls as they continued to stare at the monitor.

  Right now, it was enough that her family was happy.
