PROLOGUE: BREAKER
Earth, Berserker Compound
Nothing about the hyperloop train that shot across the horizon, nor the sparkling lights of the residences below, felt like home to me, but this was Earth. This was where I had been born and raised—until that fateful day when I’d been taken to the superhero space station in the Oram System known as the Citadel. I stood at the window of the fortified mansion on the hillside that Drew had arranged for me and my team of “Breaker’s Berserkers.”
It wasn’t the noise that woke me, but a sense of unease. I had been in bed dreaming of my time on the other side of the universe—or another time in another universe altogether, for all I knew—wondering if my adventures would take me out there soon. Spending time on Earth again had been a blessing, if for no other reason than to give my son, Kai, a normal upbringing. Well, as normal as an upbringing surrounded by superheroes could be. Regardless, Kai was in public school, had normal friends, and would even sneak out occasionally or stay up late playing videogames when he wasn’t supposed to… like a normal kid.
We’d settled in nicely here on Earth, and every time we went out to fight the latest villains that threatened any of the galaxies within the Citadel’s purview, I was eager to get back. Having a kid would do that to you, even if said kid was nearly an adult.
“Come back to bed,” a soft, sultry voice said. Cold hands found my bare chest from behind. I didn’t need to turn around to know it was Gale. She pressed her curvy body to mine. “It’s too late to still be up.”
“Or too early to wake,” I replied, but pointed to the glow from the train as it vanished from sight. “You ever wonder if that thing’s going to go flying off the track and slam into one of those houses below?”
Her hand moved down my chest to the waist of my boxer briefs. A shiver to run through my body.
“Maybe you need a distraction,” she said.
“I suppose.”
I turned to face her, loving the way the light hit her. With her dark skin, only the side of her face and her curves were visible. My imagination filled in the rest, then my touch—one hand caressed the underside of her breast; the other hand skimmed her thigh. I leaned in to find her lips with mine, but I never quite made it. A rattling so immense it shook the walls tore our attention away from each other.
“What the hell…?” I turned back to the window, half expecting to see a train crash. Instead, what I saw was a barrage of flames as they collided with the energy shield that protected my fortress of a house.
We’ve got company, a voice filtered through my mind. That would be Laurel, the mind-reader of the group.
I know, I replied with a thought. Seeing the attack now. Fire.
Then you’re seeing something else, because what I’ve got on my side are two supervillains and what looks like a gang of wannabes. Thoughts?
I didn’t want to cause too much trouble for the nearby residents—this wouldn’t be our first noise complaint. But the problem with being the type of superheroes that didn’t wear masks or hide their identities was that we made for very visible targets.
Gale was already up and dressing, much to my chagrin. I gave her a quick glance, mentally snapshotting her beauty, before leaping into action and throwing my own superhero outfit on. We had all upgraded recently, and now we truly looked like a team. Our color scheme was mostly blue and white, though Charm insisted on wearing splashes of pink. We each had a little flourish like that, something small and personal to set us apart.
As I dressed, I sent out to Laurel, Ask Shimmer to put an illusion around us so the neighbors can sleep. Any luck getting into the attacker’s minds to see where they came from?
Of course. Once we deal with them, there’s a warehouse down by La Crescenta that needs a visit.
I strolled through the door behind Gale as I told her the situation. We met Charm sitting cross-legged on the kitchen island, with a piece of carrot cake in one hand and a bottle of orange Fanta in the other.
To Charm’s credit, her horrible diet hadn’t seemed to affect her figure in the slightest. Not that I minded, as I was quite turned on by Gale’s luscious form. Charm’s nine pink fox tails were curled up to cushion her, which meant her red nighty—and the soft skin it revealed—was on full display. Her dark pink hair, fluffy fox ears, and (currently) pink eyes sent a tingle up my spine. Charm’s color-changing eyes were always beautiful, but the new look was doing something for me. I was sorely tempted to abandon the fight and jump up on that kitchen island with her.
“Another attacker?” Charm sighed, licking off one last dollop of icing before setting the half-eaten slice of cake aside. “At least they come to us now. That’s convenient.”
I chuckled. “Just… do you mind? I think Kai has visitors. Speaking of… when visitors are here, maybe wear more?”
“More what?”
“Er…” I gestured to the purple panties peeking out under the lacy hem bunched up around her waist.
“Oh, right.” She frowned, then hopped off the island, her tails luminescing faintly before floating out behind her. Now that was a sight to behold. Seeing Charm in all her glory took me back to our early days, when she had surprised me with her invisibility power on the prison ship. That was when we’d teamed up to fight Metallica and recruited Twitch to our side.
Where was Twitch, anyway? With a glance over to the security cams, I found my answer. Twitch stood amidst a swarm of floating screens, her green hair flowing, her metallic blue superhero outfit and its curved trim reflecting the screens’ pale glow. Adjusting the code of our shield to amplify it and add new defenses, probably.
Charm had vanished, and when she reappeared, she was wearing her superhero uniform as well.
“Shall we?” Gale gestured to the door just as another attack rocked the building. Judging by the lightning flashing in her eyes, she was ready for th
e fight to come.
“Oh, yeah. Let’s kick some major ass!” Charm joined us on our way to the door, that Fanta bottle still in her hand. I knew her well enough not to say anything about it.
“All good, sir?” the old man at the desk near the front door asked. He was a new hire, a caretaker, so his name hadn’t stuck yet.
“We’ll only be a moment,” I replied. “Just make sure the energy shield holds. Have the staff on standby in case there’s a mess to clean up.”
“And by mess you mean…?”
“Bodies, yes,” Gale answered for me. I suppressed a wince. “And we’ll do our best to avoid that.”
“Much appreciated, ma’am.”
“Thanks, Gerald.”
Gerald! That was it. I grinned at the old man and stepped up to the doors so that the scanner above could register my face. A beep sounded and then the doors slid open. Other doors would open in case of fire, but the house was programmed to be cautious when under attack. If my son or his friends stumbled out in the middle of a supervillain assault and lost their heads, I would never be able to forgive myself.
“Let’s remind them why they don’t fuck with us,” Charm said, then charged out.
I smiled, always happy to follow those tails. I knew better than to use the full breadth of my powers here on Earth where people, or at least their damn cameras and satellites, were watching. With that in mind, I opted to go low-profile. As I walked, I summoned a light blue screen that lit up with what I thought of as my Power Wheel, where I was able to mix and match powers in order to get the right talent level. I’d upgraded quite a bit since becoming a Tier 1 super and Elder of the Citadel.
I adjusted the Wheel until most of my powers were inactive but accessible, granting me the flexibility to easily switch styles depending on what the fight needed. That was a great boon when I was up against multiple unfamiliar enemies, but against a powerful foe whose weaknesses I could scan, I could lock in exactly the power I needed and pour all of my resources into it. Gone were the days when my powers weren’t under my control—now I could maneuver them and make adjustments as needed. Not to say my old methods for amping my powers didn’t work anymore, but they weren’t as necessary.
Twitch’s green hair fluttered behind her as she flew past me, floating along a gust of wind she must have created. Her screens allowed her to hack her surroundings, whether that meant creating doors where there weren’t any, or adjusting a wind current to be strong enough to lift her. Not a bad power to have in a tight spot. Her hacking skills had come in handy in many ways over the years as well, like unlocking or manipulating the powers of the rest of the team.
Speaking of the team, where were they? I spun to see Gale with hands up and gales of icy wind blasting at one attacker to freeze him in place. Charm was assaulting another group with a burst of her charms, and seconds later they hit the ground unconscious, but the others were nowhere to be seen.
An enemy super with red armor and pulsating light surrounding him flew overhead.
Damn! Twitch was farther ahead and hadn’t noticed, and I hadn’t thought to make sure I had flying powers. I quickly pulled up my screen to readjust. Before I had the chance, a burst of flames lit up the sky nearby and I had to throw myself sideways and out of their path.
“Where are the others?” I called out into comms.
Twitch replied, “Off with Ezra and company, dealing with an attack on Dubai. But Aegriss is on her way to us.”
“Got it.”
I’d have preferred not to go all out, but this fire-prick was starting to piss me off. I rolled down the hillside and then scrambled for cover behind a dip in the ground. There I pulled up the screen, transitioned my Power Wheel to focus on speed and flight, and took off after the guy.
Two women appeared to my left, one shooting out a burst of purple electricity while the other spun to reveal massive wings of light like a fairy. I dove out of the way of that purple blast, but both converged on me.
Lucky for me, two could play at the electricity game. I shot a chain attack through the women. Unsurprisingly, it bounced off the electricity user, but the other lost her wings momentarily, and that was enough to give me the opening I needed.
A quick scan showed that electricity woman called herself Sparkfire and that she was closing in on her sixties. Not bad-looking for her age! But what really caught my attention was the fact that her powers allowed her an energy shield like something out of a game. Good for her, but it wasn’t going to hold up against what I was about to throw her way.
Charging forward, I pulled on my illusion powers and then molded my apparition into reality, shaping myself a set of gleaming paladin armor, unfurling dragon wings from my back, and hefting a massive war hammer over my shoulder. Overkill? Maybe, but I was annoyed that most of my team wasn’t helping and a bit pissed that these fuckers had attacked while my son was home.
My war hammer connected with the electricity woman’s energy shield, a mighty blow that sent glowing purple cracks spiderwebbing across its translucent surface. A few pieces flaked off, but as they did she spun and seemed to activate them. A series of concussive fire-and-lightning blasts exploded towards me. Well, that explained why she called herself Sparkfire.
I dodged and weaved through the air, but one slammed into me, sending me hurtling through the air. I barely righted myself in time to avoid the second. A third detonated nearby and I threw myself out of the way, only to slam into the top of a tree I hadn’t noticed.
“Almost got you, huh?” Charm said through comms, and I turned to see her grinning at me.
“Maybe you weren’t watching close enough,” I replied. “She did get me. But I’m still standing.”
“For now. But if you don’t look out—”
“Meaning…?” I spun just in time to see Fairy Woman was back up and coming at me, but at the last second she swerved. Behind her came a man with two massive blades emerging from his forearms. The first nearly tore into my throat, the second gave me a bit of a haircut.
“That was the best warning you could think of?” I shouted out to Charm, dodging left and then rolling across the ground to avoid more strikes.
“I like seeing you in danger,” she shot back, already on her way to help out. “You’re so damned overpowered these days.”
“I’m not OP, just…” Ah, who was I kidding? There’d been a time when I was still figuring out my powers, but lately I one hundred percent felt like I’d evolved into god mode. “Okay, fine. But I’m not struggling now. Watch this.”
Spinning, I dodged a strike and then came in hard to slam my war hammer into the man’s chest, dropping him. Two quick kicks left the man unconscious, then Twitch was at my side, adjusting code to temporary silence the enemy’s powers. It was a nice little trick she had picked up, though it only worked when the opponent was unconscious.
She aimed a wave of disruption at Sparkfire and Fairy. Both fell from the sky. Charm charged over to catch the former, breathing a charm on her to leave her unconscious. The latter’s fall was slowed by a gust of wind that Twitch sent her way, but there was still a thud when the woman’s body hit the ground. She’d be in pain when she woke, without a doubt. In pain, and without the use of her powers—Twitch was already working on the code of the attackers to see to that. One of our key pillars to our mission on Earth was removing power usage from those who abused their powers. While that sucked, it was an effective punishment. And if they ever proved themselves worthy, Twitch could easily give them a reset.
