Our little man is thriving. He loves to eat and he smiles all the time. He’s such a happy baby. He only ever cries if he’s hungry or has a dirty diaper. He also has both his mommy and his daddy wrapped around his little finger. We wouldn’t have it any other way.
Climbing out of bed, I slip into my robe and set off on a hunt for my boys. I follow the low sounds of the piano. As I get closer to the formal family room, the song gets louder and I can make out the beat. A grin tips my lips. Just as I reach the doorway, the song stops.
“That’s mommy’s song,” Tristan tells our son. “She’s my brown eyed girl. When you get older you’ll understand. Not only did she give me you, but she lights every part of my life on fire. It’s brighter with her, more vibrant. You’ll find her one day son and when you do, fight like hell.” Tristan chuckles when Zach coos loudly. “You’re right. Love her hard. That’s what we do, as Lewis men it’s our job to love hard.”
When a tear rolls down my cheek, I wipe it away with the sleeve of my robe. My husband, the bad boy drummer, is not that at all. He’s this soft hearted tender man, who loves with everything in him. I thank my lucky stars each and every day for bringing him into my life. Well, and Zach.
“You know, just because daddy’s in a band, and has partied a time or two does not mean that you get to party at three in the morning. Not until you’re a little older,” Tristan says. The sounds of Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl” starts again and that’s my cue.
Quietly, I walk into the room and the sight before me takes my breath away. My husband, who is in nothing but a pair of pajama pants, his strong muscular arms and tattoos on full display, is holding our son in his arms. Zach is cuddled up to his chest in his little blue sleeper with music notes all over it. His eyes are wide open as he stares up at his daddy. My heart is happy. Needing to be with them, I step further into the room and take a seat beside Tristan on the bench. He stops playing.
“Hey, Mommy.” He leans in and kisses me. “We wanted to let you sleep.”
“What? Is this a guys’ only party?” I ask reaching over and grabbing Zach’s little feet and he coos at me.
“Mommy is always the exception,” he says leaning in for another kiss.
“His days and nights are mixed up,” I say smiling down at Zach.
“Yeah, but we’ll get there. Won’t we bud?” Tristan asks him. “He’s getting better, besides he was used to nursing staff round the clock poking and prodding. He’s only waking up once a night now.”
“Yeah, but he’s up forever,” I laugh softly.
Tristan shrugs. “No place I’d rather be, Ren.”
“I couldn’t agree more.” Reaching over, I take Zach from his arms and Tristan begins to play once again. This time it’s Journey’s “Faithfully” a song that I swear could have been written for us. Leaning my head on his shoulder, I close my eyes and let his deep voice and the sound of the piano wash over me. I get lost in the lyrics like I do every time I hear it. Our journey plays through my mind. I know that this is just the beginning for us, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
